Your Mission:

This is an opportunity to join a tight-knit, dynamic legal department and a growing privacy team at a high-growth, high-impact life sciences company. Our Privacy team works with all groups across Medidata, especially Information Security and Global Compliance and Strategy, to incorporate privacy in everything we do in service of our mission: to advance the development of new treatments. We are hiring an Associate General Counsel, Privacy who will report to Medidata’s SVP, DGC & Chief Privacy Counsel and help us tackle some of the most complex questions at the intersection of privacy law and policy, technology and life sciences research. You’re an experienced, practical and collaborative lawyer who is passionate about the opportunity to shape the technology we build and the opportunity to shape public policy to advance research and save lives.  

Responsibilities:

  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on privacy and data protection, risk and risk mitigation.
  • Manage complex privacy initiatives in coordination with involved stakeholders to ensure privacy policies are correctly implemented and that new product offerings meet our privacy and data protection requirements.
  • Develop and mature our privacy controls (privacy by design, data registries, etc.) to continuously improve our data privacy and data governance programs.
  • Draft and negotiate privacy and data protection agreements with our customers, partners and vendors (e.g., SCCs and DPAs for SaaS and partnership agreements).
  • Conduct comprehensive, global diligence of privacy laws, regulations and guidance and participate in life sciences industry groups and privacy associations to identify and influence emerging trends.
  • Participate in and lead cross-team efforts to bring perspective on emerging trends, to inform our strategy and help develop our internal policies.

Your Education & Experience:

  • 10+ years of relevant legal experience.
  • Member in good standing of the New York State Bar or registered as in-house counsel; other state bar membership considered.
  • Demonstrated success in designing, implementing and/or developing a business-enabling privacy program, preferably in a control compliance framework (ISO, SOC, etc.).
  • Experience negotiating and drafting commercial privacy agreements.
  • Deep expertise in one or more global privacy frameworks (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, CSL, state breach laws). 
  • Experience executing projects with regulators, industry associations or other privacy stakeholders and/or expertise with public policy, regulatory law or privacy law development is helpful.
  • Understanding of SaaS technologies and/or Life Sciences business is helpful.
