Digital Experimentation/Investigative Reporter

News Sacramento, California Youngstown, Ohio

This position is fully remote based in Youngstown, OH.

Mahoning Matters in Youngstown, Ohio, seeks a driven, collaborative, and innovative reporter who is eager to experiment with different ways to tell stories and connect with audiences on an ever-evolving digital news site.

Being a part of Mahoning Matters means being a part of the McClatchy editorial experimentation team, which is finding new ways to connect with readers and deliver essential journalism. Whatever local news looks like in the next year or the next five years — that’s the work we’re doing right now.

Though this is a work-from-home job, we need our reporter to live in or move near Ohio’s Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area, so they can get face-time with local sources and be ready to cover breaking spot news. Our area is one of the most inexpensive places to live in Ohio and boasts a wealth of natural areas (including a sprawling MetroParks) and some of the best pizza in the state — and it’s a little more than an hour’s drive from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Youngstown itself may be small, but its news is big. In the past two years, Mahoning Matters has shined a light on allegations of prosecutorial misconduct and COVID-19 misinformation circulated by local officials in charge of pandemic response, investigated toxic waste dumping in residential areas, and taken local dives into national news like the January 6 Capitol riot and the U.S. evacuation of Afghanistan, finding angles that resonate in our community.

For that bright and entrepreneurial reporter hunting for a big story to put on top of a portfolio — Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley are where thoughtful and inquisitive journalists will shine. Our small but mighty team is on a first-name basis with everyone on our beats, from local sources who admire our work, to Ohio’s governor, who regularly engages with us. We are seeking a new teammate as we continue to grow readership, loyalty and influence across the Mahoning Valley and the entire state.

The job’s demands are great, but the returns are even greater. This is a progressive, inclusive team environment with a two-year track record of breaking big stories and asking tough questions. As our mission statement says, we aim to “fairly report on under-covered topics and hold powerful people and institutions to account.” Our vital community journalism doesn't stop at "who, what, when and where" — it focuses on the "how and why." We also provide readers with utility journalism and news they can use in their lives.

Mahoning Matters is a fast-paced environment, and this journalist will juggle community reporting (breaking news and enterprise and accountability journalism), email newsletter contributions, some video/photography work, and audience growth and engagement tactics.
