Content Editor, Flex Team

News Sacramento, California

McClatchy is building a “flex team” of versatile content editors who can handle stories large and small, from breaking news to service journalism to beat work, for our award-winning markets across the country. The ideal candidate is a skilled editor who is collaborative and adaptable. Assignments and newsrooms will change as needs arise.

At McClatchy, we put a premium on breaking stories first as well as investing in hard-nosed, accountability journalism that our audience can’t get anywhere else.

Our journalism focuses on our local communities, and in that role we have the ability to spotlight problems, highlight solutions and truly make a difference -- all the reasons you got into journalism. And we are part of McClatchy, a digitally driven company focused on innovation, with newsrooms in 30 communities in the United States.

If you love the craft of editing - working with talented reporters and visual journalists to shape a story from beginning to end, anticipating readers’ questions, looking for information gaps, fact-checking, punching up a lead - this role is for you.

This is a full-time, remote position.

In this role, you will need to:

  • Do hands-on editing of all story types, from sports to business to city government and local education. Some days, you’ll help move copy. Other days, you’ll dive in and work with a reporter to make a story sing.

  • Focus on story approaches that build readership.

  • Think about audience first and always, with a commitment to tactics that grow readership.

  • Demonstrate speed, competitiveness and SEO savvy through aggregating and storytelling tools.

  • Work well in a team environment

The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:

  • College degree or equivalent work experience

  • 5-10 years of editing experience, preferably at a daily news outlet.

  • Strong editing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.

  • Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.

  • Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.

  • Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
