This position will manage a team of product owners that are key to developing the platforms delivering our award-winning journalism to communities across the country every day. Additionally, this position will work with our scrum masters to ensure we are maximizing the value created by all scrum teams. The Lead Product Owner is responsible for managing a team of Product Owners that transforms business requirements into detailed, high-quality functional specifications. This position will be a liaison between business stakeholders, product management and the development team. A deep understanding of the technologies driving online digital products and the changing technical landscape is essential.

 Team and Product Leadership

  • Serve as a product expert, driving requirements and actions across multiple teams
  • Lead a team of product owners focused on a subset of McClatchy's digital products, ensuring they understand and are focused on the strategic direction, delivering the right features and fulfilling desired business goals
  • Regularly provide coaching for the team of product owners and equip them with the knowledge, tools, and resources to be successful
  • Use research, data analysis, user experience analysis and testing, competitive research and other relevant tools to ensure informed decision making and prioritize opportunities
  • Define, review, and improve team processes regularly
  • Evangelize and communicate the product vision both internally and externally
  • Work with multiple teams to establish and adhere to clear project plans, timelines, resources, milestones, etc. and help ensure timely and accurate completion of projects
  • Engage with vendors to either provide or supplement product offerings
  • Champion a culture of teamwork and innovation while ultimately taking ownership of key product decisions
  • Develop effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain a solutions-oriented approach, working quickly to remove obstacles
  • Work closely with product management and stakeholders to align on the vision, program backlog, and roadmap
  • Ensure the teams deliver exceptional, timely results

 Product Ownership

  • Collaborate with technical, creative and business stakeholders to ensure timely and relevant product implementations
  • Work with cross-functional and co-located teams and have full understanding of engineering, user experience, analytics, project management, QA, and how these areas interact and work together
  • Develop feature requirements with clear product acceptance criteria in a prioritized product backlog
  • Prioritize the backlog according to business goals and objectives while focusing on building and delivering the most value within the constraints of time and resources
  • Collect feedback from stakeholders, and ultimately accept the product development work
  • Participate in release planning and provide support for releases as needed
  • Work with development to periodically analyze the production system to expose weaknesses and find ways to re-design for greater success

 Project Management & Support

  • Work with customer support to identify, diagnose, and resolve production issues as they arise
  • Keep customers and stakeholders apprised of status



  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, a related field, or comparable experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a product manager/owner
  • Continuous, self-initiated learning
  • Experience writing formal business & technical requirements and documentation 
  • Experience leading cross-functional and co-located efforts and working closely with UX, analytics, user research, visual designers, development teams, and business stakeholders
  • Experience in completing projects using Agile methodologies
  • Continuous, self-initiated learning

  • Some travel may be necessary - 0-10%
