Assistant Managing Editor
Description
The Sacramento Bee is seeking an Assistant Managing Editor to lead our local news coverage and collaborate with a dynamic news team focused on breaking news and producing enterprise, accountability and investigative journalism. The Sacramento region offers a vast array of news opportunities for our award-winning newsroom, and this editor plays a pivotal role in creating innovative and engaging ways to cover the capital of California and Northern California.
Local news here is also state news, and this position opens many doors to crafting coverage for the Sacramento region. A half million people live in Sacramento, and our coverage extends beyond the city limits with content that explains the issues for those who live in its surrounding counties. This editor works closely with our investigative, enterprise, utility, visuals and political editors to help us deliver high-impact coverage of the area’s growing communities. The Assistant Managing Editor leads our efforts to deliver exclusive and essential stories about criminal justice, local government, homelessness, education, equity and more.
In recent months, our local team has covered major breaking news about downtown shootings and the attendant safety issues, wildfires and floods. We have exposed a city councilman for not living in the district he represents, covered lawsuits about sexual abuse from a teacher, prompting others to sue their abusers, and uncovered discrimination in schools. Our stories are urgent and deep, and our local assistant managing editor steers them with an eye toward serving the community and improving lives with useful news and information.
The Sacramento Bee is part of McClatchy, a digitally-driven company focused on innovation, with newsrooms in 30 communities in the U.S., and we are committed to producing journalism that makes a difference. Ethnically diverse, lively and growing, Sacramento offers cultural and recreational delights, with a thriving arts and dining scene in its urban and suburban areas. And it offers the natural wonders of California. We’re close to the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe, as well as San Francisco and the ocean.
This is an ideal position for an editor who wishes to dig deep into local news, beat coverage and story development, while guiding reporters in reporting and writing. This editor is a leader in our newsroom, helping to develop innovative strategies and ensure that The Bee’s local news coverage is unmatched in our competitive media landscape.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $105,000 and $130,000 annually. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography, and local wage and hours laws.
