California Opinion Editor/Sacramento Editorial Page Editor
The California Opinion editor will collaborate with a proven team of opinion editors and writers in Sacramento, Fresno, Modesto and San Luis Obispo, helping set the agenda for Sacramento and the region through deeply reported and compellingly written commentary and analysis.
The successful candidate will be a leader and a digital-first journalist who has a vision for providing compelling and insightful commentary that resonates with our readers. She or he will direct the editorial board’s efforts to effect change, break news and drive discussions on critical local and state issues.
This editor will write, develop and edit reported editorials representing The Bee Editorial Board’s views, as well as reported columns and multi-day Opinion projects. He or she will take the lead in soliciting commentary from influential thinkers throughout our region and will continually work to find diverse voices who can speak to issues important to our communities. Success in this position requires being at the center of our communities and including a wide range of diverse political views in our opinion content.
A strong understanding of how to grow and engage audiences on digital platforms is essential, as are basic social media and video skills. We expect timely editorials on breaking news, as well as reported editorials that break news.
While editorial board members write for both online and print, a digital metabolism is required for this position. This editor will also play a key role in our outreach efforts, planning community events, speaking to local groups and appearing on video.
At least 5-7 years of reporting experience, preferably on local issues and/or government.
Skill and versatility as a writer and editor, including the ability to shape opinion pieces in a way that best serves and engages the broadest possible audience.
Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
A zeal for understanding and using readership data to inform the editorial process.
An interest in telling stories using a variety of media and enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies.
Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
Minimum Bachelor’s degree preferred.
