We’re looking for a different kind of opinion editor at the Wichita Eagle.
We want an editorial page editor who can provide compelling and insightful commentary that engages readers, but we also want a columnist, a convener, an innovator.
We're looking for someone with a desire to provide content that reflects the Wichita community.
The opinion editor won’t just write timely, reported editorials that effect change and hold leaders accountable. She or he will write editorials and columns that break news, as well as multi-day deeper dives into topics important to our communities.
While editorial board members write for both online and print, a digital metabolism is required for this position. We want an editor and writer who thinks at the speed of news, as well as someone who is unafraid to explore new approaches to opinion content and topics.
The opinion editor will lead and convene discussions of local and statewide issues and include a wide range of diverse political views in our opinion content. She or he will take the lead in soliciting commentary from influential thinkers in the community and will work to find voices that engage our audiences and represent all of our communities. She or he also will play a key role in our outreach efforts, planning community events, speaking to local groups and appearing on video.
At least 3-5 years of reporting experience, preferably on local issues and/or government.
Skill and versatility as a writer and editor, including the ability to shape opinion pieces in a way that best serves and engages the broadest possible audience.
Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
A zeal for understanding and using readership data to inform the editorial process.
An interest in telling stories using a variety of media and enthusiasm for learning new skills and technologies.
Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
Minimum Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).
