What we offer

The Product Design Associate will work closely with senior team members to research, evaluate, and optimize building products and assemblies for SAMI’s modular and prefabricated systems. This role will focus on performance-driven design — balancing cost, manufacturability, and acoustic, fire, and thermal requirements — to ensure our products are competitive, scalable, and ready for production. In our design-build environment, you will collaborate directly with suppliers, fabricators, and consultants to integrate technical solutions early in the design process, ensuring seamless translation from concept to manufacturing. The ideal candidate will be analytical, detail-oriented, and passionate about applying innovative materials and methods to offsite construction.

What you’ll do

  • Research, evaluate, and specify materials, components, and assemblies for all scopes in modular and prefabricated construction.
  • Optimize designs for manufacturing through value engineering, balancing performance, durability, cost, and ease of installation.
  • Conduct trade-off analyses on alternate material and system options, preparing business cases to support recommendations.
  • Create detailed analyses and report-outs illustrating optimization of building components across relevant criteria.
  • Lead technical discussions with suppliers to review product capabilities, integration requirements, and manufacturing compatibility.
  • Collaborate with procurement to evaluate pricing, lead times, and supply chain considerations.
  • Maintain internal product data libraries with dimensions, performance ratings, and compliance documentation.
  • Coordinate with vendors to integrate product specifications and test data into standard design packages.
  • Support product testing and certification processes, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices, to inform product development roadmaps.
  • Track and document design changes and product iterations for continuous improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you bring

  • Post-secondary education in Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in construction, engineering, materials research, or product design.
  • Broad knowledge of building materials and systems across multiple scopes, including exterior, interior, structural, electrical, and mechanical elements.
  • Experience in value engineering and balancing cost, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Familiarity with structural, architectural, and MEP considerations in building systems.
  • Strong communication skills for engaging in technical, solution-focused discussions with suppliers and consultants.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with BIM software including AutoCAD and REVIT.
  • Experience in modular construction, prefabrication, or offsite manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with construction product testing, certification, and compliance processes.
