OB TITLE: Part-time Paratransit/ ADA Travel Training Specialist (Up to 28 hrs. per wk.) 

DEPARTMENT: Safety/ Compliance 

REPORTS TO: Compliance Officer
PAY RATE: $15.00 hourly

POSITION CLOSE DATE: UNTIL FILLED

JOB FUNCTION:Responsible for imparting knowledge and practical skills to vulnerable individuals living in the Memphis and Shelby County service area and paratransit-eligible visitors to the Memphis and Shelby County service area, regarding how to travel safely, effectively, and independently on the Memphis public transportation system.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. This position serves as the first point of contact for the scheduling of travel training services and requires daily checks of voice mails and e-mails to handle requests for training services.
  2. Coordinates and conducts daily training with individuals to teach them to travel independently on Memphis’ fixed route bus system.
  3. Monitors an individual’s progress at regular intervals and provides feedback to all involved parties.
  4. Organizes, maintains and, updates travel training files and program materials, as necessary.
  5. Identifies gaps in an individual’s knowledge and skill bases and address through further appropriate training with a goal that the trainee is able to travel independently.
  6. Undertakes route risk assessments and route planning considering those assessments.
  7. Always ensures the health and safety of the traveler when charged with their care/tutoring.
  8. Processes correspondence as directed by the ADA Compliance Officer (i.e., phone. email, and letters).
  9. Prepares and updates clients’ scheduled travel training appointments.
  10. Prepares internal reports (trainee contact log).        
  11. Participates in community outreach events to promote the program and the use of public transportation.
  12. May assume additional responsibilities as required.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or GED or equivalent at a minimum. An Associates degree or higher is preferred. An equivalent combination of education or experience will be considered.

 

Other:          

A minimum of 1 ½ years experience doing similar work is required, or a minimum of 1 year of experience working directly with transportation for persons with disabilities or the elderly.

 

Must be able to handle highly sensitive and confidential information. Confidentiality is a must.

 

Must be able to work with diverse populations with differing demographics.

 

Proven strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work. Must be able to work independently on multiple projects, doing so efficiently and with attention to detail.

 

Ability to work in a team environment and maintain a pleasant disposition

 

Must be able to use of a personal computer as well as general office equipment and Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet Explorer.

 

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public and co-workers in person and handle complaints in a positive manner. Should be able to think outside the box and develop creative solutions to recover customers who have experienced a service failure.

 

  

Environment:

Extensive standing is required. Some walking and sitting during a normal workday will also be required as well as bending, stooping, and crouching. For work that will be performed in inside working conditions should be able to tolerate changes in building environment such as with or without air conditioning or heating and be able to tolerate moderate noise levels. For field work, must be able to withstand exposure to weather, dust, engine fumes and tolerate noise levels ranging from moderate to noisy. May be required occasionally to move up to 15 pounds by lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting overhead or otherwise repositioning objects. Close visual acuity to perform detail-oriented activities as well as acuity to perform activities at or within arm’s reach with skill, control, and accuracy such as preparing and analyzing data, or viewing a computer screen.
