Job Function: The Trolley Carpenter (Millwork & Restoration) is a skilled trades professional responsible for the restoration, fabrication, and structural repair of trolley vehicles. This role combines hands-on carpentry with specialized millwork to preserve and maintain the integrity of MATA’s historic trolley fleet. The position supports safe, reliable transit operations by ensuring all wood components—structural and aesthetic—meet operational and historical standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Restoration & Repair:
- Perform structural and finish carpentry repairs on trolley vehicles, including framing, flooring, windows, doors, trim, and seating.
- Restore historic wood components using appropriate materials, techniques, and finishes.
- Assess damage and execute repair solutions aligned with safety and preservation standards.

Millwork & Fabrication:
- Fabricate custom wood components such as panels, cabinetry, trim, and specialty parts.
- Operate woodworking equipment including saws, routers, planers, and sanders.
- Measure, cut, shape, and assemble materials with precision.

Maintenance & Operations Support:
- Inspect trolley interiors and structural elements.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams.
- Assist with restoration projects.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Formal training or apprenticeship in carpentry or woodworking preferred.
· Minimum 2–3 years of professional carpentry experience; experience with historic restoration, cabinetry, or specialty woodworking strongly preferred.
- Experience in custom millwork or restoration preferred.
· Experience working in transit, rail, or transportation maintenance environments is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
· Skilled in woodworking, joinery, finish work, and structural carpentry.
· Knowledge of restoration techniques for wood components.
· Ability to operate a variety of carpentry tools and equipment safely.
· Basic understanding of mechanical systems and vehicle structure is helpful.
· Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain quality craftsmanship.
· Ability to work in a shop environment and around rail vehicles.
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for long periods, and work in tight spaces as needed.
Licenses & Certifications
· Valid driver’s license required.
· Must be able to obtain MATA safety certifications as applicable.
Working Conditions
· Work performed in the trolley maintenance shop, around moving equipment and machinery.
· Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and various weather conditions.
· Use of PPE required (safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, etc.).
