Job Title: Transit Public Safety and Security Specialist

Position Summary
The Transit Public Safety and Security Specialist help keep MATA's buses, facilities, and transit centers safe, secure, and welcoming for riders and employees. This front-line role provides a visible presence on the system, responds to incidents, supports emergency situations, and oversees contract security officers in the field.
Key Responsibilities
•    Patrol buses, transit centers, and facilities to deter crime and promote a safe, customer-friendly environment.
•    Respond to safety and security incidents, use de-escalation and customer service skills, and coordinate with police, fire, and EMS as needed.
•    Provide field oversight of contracted security officers to ensure posts are covered and duties are performed according to MATA policies and procedures.
•    Conduct basic investigations, gather information and evidence, and complete clear, accurate incident reports.
•    Assist with emergency management activities, including drills, exercises, and supporting the Incident Command System during major events and disruptions.
•    Help monitor security systems such as cameras, access control, and alarms, and identify safety and security issues at MATA locations.
•    Build positive relationships with riders, employees, community partners, and public safety agencies to address quality-of-life and public safety concerns on transit.
Minimum Qualifications
•    Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, or related field preferred; equivalent military or public safety experience considered.
•    At least 5 years of experience in law enforcement, public safety, security, military police, or a closely related field.
•    Experience working in a transit, transportation, or other critical-infrastructure environment preferred.
•    Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Skills and Abilities
•    Strong judgment, communication, and de-escalation skills; able to stay calm under pressure and work with diverse and vulnerable populations.
•    Ability to work independently in the field, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing conditions.
•    Comfortable using security technology and basic computer applications for reports and email.
•    Able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency callouts as needed.
Work Environment
•    Primarily field-based, with extensive walking, standing, and working outdoors in all-weather at transit centers, bus routes, and facilities.
•    May be required to lift up to 40 pounds and to work during severe weather, special events, and other emergencies affecting transit service.
