Position Summary:
The Building and Grounds Laborer is responsible for performing routine maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all MATA buildings, grounds, bus stops, and related infrastructure. This role ensures that all facilities are clean, safe, and presentable for employees and the public. Work includes basic carpentry, landscaping, janitorial duties, minor plumbing, and general repair tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform custodial and general maintenance duties including sweeping, mopping, trash removal, and restroom cleaning.
- Mow lawns, trim hedges, remove weeds, and maintain landscaping across transit properties.
- Conduct inspections of facilities and grounds to identify safety hazards, needed repairs, or areas requiring attention.
- Perform minor repairs to buildings including painting, patching, door adjustments, and furniture assembly.
- Clear snow and ice, or other hazards, from walkways and entry points.
- Ensure bus stops, shelters, and terminals are clean, free of debris, and maintained properly.
- Respond to maintenance requests or emergencies as needed during assigned shifts.
- Operate light equipment and tools such as lawn mowers, blowers, pressure washers, and small power tools.
- Follow safety procedures and report unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel.
- Support special projects, seasonal tasks, and assist other maintenance staff as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid driver's license
- At least one (1) year of experience in general maintenance, custodial work, landscaping, or groundskeeping.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of building systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) preferred.
- Ability to use hand tools and power equipment safely.
- Ability to work independently and follow written and oral instructions.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., stand or walk for extended periods, and perform physical labor.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record required.
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, chemicals, and noise.
- Schedule may include weekends, holidays, and early morning/late evening shifts.
