JOB SUMMARY

The Production Internship is a developmental 10-week program role designed to provide direct support to Martin Marietta's Ready-Mix Concrete operations while gaining practical experience in concrete production, dispatch operations, quality control, logistics coordination, sales support, safety, and operational management. This internship is designed to introduce students and emerging professionals to the ready-mix concrete industry through meaningful assignments, field exposure, and direct interaction with production, quality, and operations teams.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with daily ready-mix production activities at concrete batch plant locations.
  • Gain exposure to batching processes, plant operations, material flow, and production scheduling.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Martin Marietta's safety-first culture.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Observe and assist with monitoring production efficiency and plant performance metrics.
  • Learn the functions and operation of batching equipment, material handling systems, and production technologies.
  • Assist with production reporting, documentation, and operational recordkeeping.
  • Assist dispatch personnel in coordinating deliveries and scheduling resources.
  • Observe route planning and fleet utilization processes.
  • Learn how production scheduling aligns with customer delivery requirements.
  • Monitor key logistics metrics, including delivery times, fleet efficiency, and order fulfillment.
  • Support communication between dispatch, operations, drivers, and customers.
  • Assist with maintaining delivery records and operational documentation.
  • Participate in analyzing transportation and delivery performance.
  • Assist quality control personnel with testing procedures and documentation.
  • Observe laboratory and field-testing activities related to concrete quality.
  • Learn about concrete mix designs, material properties, and specification requirements.
  • Gain familiarity with industry standards, customer specifications, and quality assurance programs.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze production, delivery, and performance data.
  • Assist in preparing operational reports and management summaries.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel and internal systems to evaluate business performance.
  • Support tracking of key performance indicators (KPIs) such as production volumes, plant utilization, delivery performance, and material consumption.
  • Assist management with special projects related to cost reduction and efficiency enhancement.
  • Participate in structured learning opportunities and mentorship programs.
  • Work closely with managers and operational leaders across multiple functional areas.
  • Gain exposure to leadership responsibilities within production and operations management.
  • Complete assigned projects that contribute to operational improvements.
  • Present project findings and recommendations to management when applicable.
  • Build professional communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Develop an understanding of Martin Marietta's culture, values, and business objectives.
  • Demonstrate initiative, accountability, and a willingness to learn.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Construction Management.

Valid Driver’s License

Work Experience

No work experience is required; 6 months – 1 year of prior internship or a combination of internship and work experience, is preferred.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.

Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.

Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

Working Conditions

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry, and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.
