POSITION SUMMARY
The technician will safely perform daily, hands-on, aggregate Quality Control (QC) to maintain compliance to source QCP’s, TXDOT and other project specific, specifications.  Beginning at the plant or rail distribution site, work will be focused on safely sampling, preparing, and testing aggregates, performing inspections, supporting, and promptly communicating findings with internal and external customers, data entry, document control, reporting, and maintaining lab and other QC equipment. This position works closely with operations and sales teams to achieve common goals through daily interaction, effective communication, and team meetings.  
 
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Knowledge of aggregate QC and aggregate production operations is preferred. Perform various TXDOT and ASTM aggregate tests. Be familiar with or quickly become familiar with aggregate and Flex Base specifications to determine product compliance.  
  • Effective problem solver and team-oriented decision maker. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (i.e. Outlook, Excel, Word). Ability to perform basic calculations and determine compliance to specifications in order to guide subsequent communication and problem solving. 
  • Establish and maintain effective communications with all key areas of the local and regional QC and Operations departments.
  • Perform regular inspections for safety, housekeeping and QC at all operations within the District. 
  • Understand and apply all safety rules, regulations and procedures of mine and property as set forth by federal, state, local agencies & policies. Adhere to all company policies. 
  • Volunteer to serve on the plant safety committee, attend daily/weekly tailgate or other safety meetings. 
  • Participate in Guardian Angel safety culture and downstream activities. 
  • Assist management with inventory surveys and stockpile verifications, and local stockpile approvals. Assist in publication of approved stockpile reports as necessary. 
  • Demonstrate a positive, upbeat attitude and energy level toward teammates, peers, and customers. 
  • Daily use of Stonemont QC software, including statistical analysis for target or specification compliance and test reporting to customers. 
  • Responsible for maintaining quality of all products, including immediate notification of non-compliances and proposed solutions.
  • Maintain housekeeping and safe, clean laboratory work areas. 
  • Assist with and recommend equipment repairs or testing needs. 
  • Other duties as required.  
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Prefer 3 years aggregate testing experience or construction inspection and related materials testing. 
  • Certification as ACI Aggregates Grade 1 Technician, TXAPA Agg 101, or SB 101 recommended and preferred, but not initially required. The expectation is for technician to acquire at least two of these within 12 months. 
  • High School Diploma/GED. 
  • Required to have and maintain a valid TX driver’s license. 
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Effective planning, organizational, and communication skills (written and verbal). 
  • Understand team-based management, especially with team and individual safety. 
  • Self-starter with initiative and ability to work safely with limited supervision. 
  • Previous aggregate or construction materials QC experienced is preferred.
  • Ability to service multiple projects simultaneously, often with changes in priorities.
  • Visit asphalt and concrete plants, construction projects to sample and inspect products. 
  • Ability to travel safely by company vehicle or other commercial means, less than 5% Overnight Travel. Communicate professionally, effectively and often with customers. 
  • Must be able to work occasional weekends (generally one day/month) as required. 
PHYISICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to perform duties in a consistent, safe manner.  This job requires the ability to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves, hearing protection and other required PPE. 
  • Must have satisfactory hand-eye coordination, balance, and ability to safely collect and process samples. 
  • Must be able to occasionally climb stairs to a height of 30 ft. and briefly work at this height. 
  • Must be able to follow company Basic Safety Rules, MSHA requirements, and other policies regarding safety. 
  • Ability to operate hand-held radio, computer and lab equipment as required. 
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, climb and reach around all areas of equipment always utilizing 3 points of contact. 
  • Lift up to 60 lbs. 
  • Must be able to occasionally walk across steep/rough terrain. 
  • Ability to use hand tools such as shovels, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. 
WORKING CONDITIONS 
Labs are typically air conditioned.  There will be times when outside assignments may require periods of work in all weather conditions-heat, cold, wet or dry and dusty.  Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dBs.
