Director, Compensation

Reporting to the Vice President of Total Rewards, the Director of Compensation will be responsible for the design, implementation, on-going administration, and oversight of Martin Marietta’s broad-based and executive compensation programs. These programs should support Martin Marietta’s business strategy and enable the organization to attract, retain, and motivate talented employees.

The successful candidate will have outstanding leadership, communication, collaboration, and analytical skills and will be a high-level strategic thinker capable of partnering with Martin Marietta’s senior leaders to transform the Company’s compensation practices for the future. This individual must have a continuous improvement mindset and be capable of being a motivational leader, a hands-on manager, and a results-oriented executor.

In order to thrive, this individual will need to develop a deep understanding of Martin Marietta’s business and must build positive, meaningful, and collaborative relationships across the organization. The candidate must earn credibility and be viewed as a true business partner and trusted advisor on all compensation topics.  Given that this role supports all Martin Marietta employees, ranging from hourly employees in the field to the CEO, this individual will need to develop strong partnerships with leaders across the enterprise.  



  • Consult with corporate and divisional management to ensure compensation programs and processes enable and support the business strategy of the organization and business needs
  • Lead all efforts of the Compensation team, addressing complex compensation-related business issues and establishing a positive direction for the department based on collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Provide subject matter expertise and guidance to executives, managers, and employees regarding compensation philosophy, recommendations, strategy, administration, procedures, policies, practices, and communications
  • Drive the benchmarking, design and implementation of all compensation programs, including base pay, short-term and long-term incentive plans, and ensure they align with company strategy and best-in-class practices
  • Prepare analyses and Board presentations related to executive market pay, short and long-term incentive plan design, annual incentive award recommendations, proxy analyses, and CEO pay in collaboration with the Company’s Executive Compensation Consultant
  • Provide compensation and job evaluation expertise and advice to other members of the HR team
  • Build, develop and lead a team of high-performing professionals, ensuring appropriate growth opportunities and succession planning
  • Oversee the completion and review of market benchmark surveys, analyze competitive market data and develop recommendations for merit budgets, market equity adjustments, promotions, salary structure changes, and incentive targets to ensure market competitiveness. Develop and present recommendations and costs associated with annual budgets
  • Support development of new HR programs and practices related to data analytics
  • Work closely with Payroll Shared Services and Finance to ensure compensation decisions are applied appropriately, incentive plan accruals are accurate and shared technology efforts are coordinated
  • Manage and participate in key projects, programs, and initiatives, including merger, acquisition, and divestiture efforts, as necessary


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • MBA and/or Master’s Degree preferred


  • At least 10 years of experience in Human Resources in roles of increasing responsibility, including at least 5 years in compensation roles
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation and administration of broad-based compensation programs across a dispersed enterprise, with extensive exposure to both hourly wage and salaried pay structures
  • Experience leading transformational compensation-related projects, including job leveling, pay grade structure, and incentive plan design projects, to successful completion
  • Experience managing and leading a public company compensation team during a time of change and growth
  • Executive compensation experience at a publicly-traded company or top compensation consulting firm is required
  • Experience supporting due diligence and integration processes for acquisitions, divestitures, and/or other transactions

  • In-depth domain knowledge in job evaluation, job architecture, market pricing, benchmarking, salary structure design and development, pay for performance, and incentive compensation
  • The ability to think and function strategically, complimented by the ability to execute and respond tactically and manage in a fast-paced, high volume environment
  • Well-developed project management, change management, and process design skills
  • Exceptional analytical skills, with the ability to manipulate, validate, and evaluate complex data in order to develop and support recommendations
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to influence others without direct authority and to tailor materials to match the level of the audience
  • Proven record of developing positive working relationships grounded in trust, respect, and collaboration
  • Forward thinking with a continuous improvement and customer service mindset; track record of driving and delivering results in a positive, transparent way
  • Strong tact, judgment, diplomacy, and discretion and an ability to work in diverse environments
