JOB SUMMARY

 

Working under the guidance of experienced Production Leaders, the Management Associate participates in a structured 18-to-24-month development program that provides exposure to Martin Marietta's Asphalt andamp; Paving division. This position provides comprehensive exposure to all aspects of asphalt production, project estimation, paving operations, materials management, financial performance, and field execution. The associate works closely with estimating, operations, construction, quality control, and sales teams to develop the technical, financial, and leadership skills required to successfully manage paving projects and production operations.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the preparation of detailed cost estimates for asphalt paving, grading, and related roadway construction projects.
  • Review project plans, specifications, bid documents, contracts, and design drawings to identify project requirements and risks.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for asphalt tonnage, striping, traffic control, and other project components.
  • Analyze production rates, crew efficiencies, and equipment utilization to establish accurate project costs.
  • Assess project risks, constructability challenges, logistical considerations, and potential operational impacts.
  • Support the preparation and submission of competitive bid proposals while maintaining targeted profit margins.
  • Participate in bid reviews and estimate presentations with management teams.
  • Maintain estimating databases, historical cost records, and bid tracking systems.
  • Assist in developing pricing strategies based on market conditions, competition, production capacity, and project complexity.
  • Gain working knowledge of asphalt plant production, paving operations, and quality control processes.
  • Support project startup activities, including scheduling, resource allocation, and production planning.
  • Monitor daily paving activities to ensure productivity, quality, and safety objectives are achieved.
  • Work with superintendents and project managers to optimize crew performance and equipment utilization.
  • Evaluate project progress and help identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
  • Participate in project closeout activities and final cost analysis.
  • Track project budgets, labor productivity, equipment costs, and material consumption.
  • Monitor actual production and job cost performance against estimated budgets.
  • Assist in forecasting project revenue, expenses, and profitability.
  • Review job cost reports and identify variances requiring corrective action.
  • Participate in project meetings with internal stakeholders, customers, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Promote and support Martin Marietta's commitment to safety as a core value.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, environmental requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Identify and report safety hazards and assist with corrective action implementation.
  • Develop an understanding of asphalt mix designs, testing requirements, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Collaborate with quality control personnel to ensure products meet specifications.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management

Valid Driver’s License

 

Work Experience

 

No prior work experience is required; 6 months – 1 year of industry related internships or a combination of internships and work experience in Asphalt andamp; Paving is preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Familiarity with Asphalt andamp; Paving industry

Familiarity with estimating software and project management systems

OSHA compliance and regulations

Effective communicator (written andamp; spoken)

Proficient Computer skills (MS Word andamp; Excel)

Time management

 

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

 

Physical Requirements

 

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.

Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.

Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

 

Working Conditions

 

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry, and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

The hiring range for this position is $65,000 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members. The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position. In addition, this role is eligible for our annual bonus program. Bonuses awarded under this program are determined based on the performance of the organization and the employee.
