Division Summary

Martin Marietta’s Central Division covers ten states in the Midwest and Southeast. With leading market positions across Aggregates and Asphalt (Minnesota), the Central Division is strategically positioned for continued long-term growth.

Position Summary

By providing leadership to strategic planning, business development, and business performance monitoring, the Director, Strategic Planning supports the Central Division’s overall strategic direction and business operations. This role partners with Central Division leaders to develop, evaluate, and implement strategic growth opportunities and business improvement projects. In addition, the position advances Division SOAR initiatives and engages in high-level sales and operational planning for annual budgeting. Responsibilities are across all product lines, driving division and enterprise commercial strategies, along with process improvement activities to drive near - and long-term business performance.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic planning

  • Partners with business leaders and other stakeholders to evaluate strategic investments and growth initiatives. Serves as a key resource to President and VP/GMs to identify, analyze, and
    execute growth opportunities.
  • Facilitates the Division’s SOAR implementation and leads tracking of identified opportunities.
  • Leads development of business strategies and analytics to support vertical integration and M&A.
  • Leads development of industry, market, and competitive analysis to support strategy formulation and business planning.
  • Communicates and reinforces business strategy across all core functions.
  • Is a key conduit with strategic targets and facilitates those relationships.
  • Lead division due diligence for newly acquired businesses.

Business development

  • Assists in development and coordination of commercial strategies (including price letters) across product lines and geographic areas to improve market positions and increase sales growth.
    Ensures business development initiatives align with overall division/company strategies.
  • Partners with sales and operational leaders to identify and plan for opportunities that improve the customer value proposition through technology and ease of doing business. 
  • Builds internal and external relationships to support new business opportunities. Represents the Division in relevant industry associations and organizations.

Business performance monitoring

  • Develops framework for ongoing performance evaluation and portfolio optimization. Ensures product line decisions are based on enterprise value creation.
  • Leads the development, monitoring, and assessment of the Central Division’s strategic targets.

Other

  • Develops and delivers presentations and other communications as needed.
  • This role may assume direct reports in the future. If so, position manages team members in their day-to-day project execution and provides career development, coaching, and support. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA preferred.
  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills to develop relationships with stakeholders and partner with business leaders.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience through prior roles with increasing levels of
    responsibility.
  • Track record of leading and collaborating cross-functionally to gain buy-in, support, and assistance from key stakeholders.
  • Transaction evaluation and execution experience (mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures).
  • Strong strategic thinker who demonstrates proven analytical, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • 7+ years progressive work experience in areas such as corporate development, strategic planning, management consulting, sales and/or operational leadership, finance, accounting or
    other relevant disciplines. Experience in the construction materials industry preferred.
