Intern, Continuous Improvement/Industrial Engineering (Summer 2027)
Description
The Martin Marietta Continuous Improvement/Industrial Engineering Internship at the Salisbury Shop provides students with meaningful, hands-on experience supporting engineering, fabrication, machining, and repair operations within the Company's only crusher repair facility.
Reporting to the Shop Manager, the Engineering Intern will gain exposure to a wide variety of engineering and manufacturing processes while working alongside experienced engineers, machinists, welders, and maintenance and warehouse personnel. This opportunity allows students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world industrial environment while developing technical, analytical, and project management skills.
Interns will gain experience in safety, quality control, continuous improvement, 5S, automation, and procedure development.andnbsp; Additional learning opportunities include hands-on CNC machining processes, CNC cutting processes, welding operations, and rock crusher assembly and disassembly processes. Through these experiences, interns will develop a deeper understanding of manufacturing, equipment maintenance, and engineering practices that support safe, efficient, and reliable operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow and promote Martin Marietta's safety, environmental, and ethical standards in all work activities.
- Actively participate in company safety initiatives and support a culture of safety excellence.
- Demonstrate safety consciousness, dependability, motivation, and professionalism in daily activities.
- Identify and assist with the implementation of projects that improve facility and process safety, quality control, and facility-wide 5S adoption.
- Identify and scope projects which increase automated processes in mechanic, welding, machining, and warehousing operations.
- Record and develop work instructions for our common repair processes.
- Assist in the transition of our quality control processes from paper to digital.
- Gain hands-on experience using precision measuring equipment, including micrometers, calipers, and vision measuring systems.
- Observe and support CNC machining and CNC cutting processes within the manufacturing environment.
- Gain exposure to welding operations and machine assembly/disassembly activities.
- Collaborate effectively with engineering, fabrication, machining, and maintenance teams to support operational objectives.
- Demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and a strong work ethic while working independently and as part of a team.
- Perform all responsibilities in accordance with the Company's Mission, Vision, Values, policies, procedures, and Code of Ethical Business Conduct.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Automation Engineering.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn in a manufacturing and engineering environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in both office and shop environments.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, bend, or perform physical activities for extended periods as required.
- Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, safety-toe shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, and other required safety equipment while in operational areas.
