Position Summary

This is an enterprise-wide leadership role responsible for directing the occupational health (OH) and industrial hygiene (IH) programs, advancing the Company’s Guardian Angel safety culture and programs, managing regulatory compliance, and providing executive level reporting.

 

This role will champion the Company’s world-class safety culture and capabilities to enable industry-leading business performance, continuous improvement, and shareholder value while reinforcing Martin Marietta’s culture and values. With a focus on driving employee engagement, this position builds strong relationships at every level of the Company and has frequent interaction with the key company leaders. Reporting to the Vice President, Enterprise Safety and Health, the position is based at Martin Marietta’s corporate headquarters in Raleigh, NC and requires frequent travel to operating divisions.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Advance Martin Marietta’s World-Class Safety Culture and IH/OH Programs

  • Champions the Company’s Guardian Angel safety culture and consistently promote employee engagement
  • Identifies and implements industrial hygiene and occupational health sampling, initiatives, training programs, and best practices in alignment with operating divisions
  • Drives a risk-based approach to identifying and mitigating risks to protect the health and wellbeing of our employees
  • Ensures employee awareness of industrial hygiene and occupational health developments.
  • Leads medical surveillance and monitoring programs for the Company
  • Engages with the Safety Executive Steering Committee, Enterprise Excellence, Human Resources and Divisional teams to advise on companywide occupational health trends, strategy, initiatives, and resources
  • Leads efforts to resolve potential issues by identifying risk and implementing programs to mitigate

 

Drive Enterprise Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health Excellence

  • Establishes and maintains relationships and influence within all levels of the organization to gather feedback on IH/OH topics, integrate IH and OH objectives into operational focus areas, and set strategies for IH/OH improvement
  • Advises and collaborates with consultants and site leadership to resolve IH/OH issues
  • Leads the integration of processes and systems to support compliance activities across the enterprise
  • Assesses and analyzes research data, summarizing statistics and compiling reports.
  • Proposes and leads the implementation of programs to protect employee health and implementing ergonomics evaluations and proposed solutions where required
  • Manages annual mobile van testing and works closely with TPA to coordinate industrial hygiene sampling activities and works closely with division safety professionals to ensure completion of identified corrective and/or preventative actions in support of the Company’s sampling strategy
  • Manages, tracks, and reports occupational health metrics regularly and effectively communicates performance directly to leadership, including corporate, division, district, and site-specific occupational health sampling results, to allow for data-driven decision-making
  • Oversee occupational health and industrial hygiene programs, including annual mobile van testing, with internal and external parties to ensure compliance with OSHA/MSHA requirements

  • Perform all activities in accordance with Martin Marietta’s Mission, Vision, and Values, and in compliance with the company’s policies, procedures, and Code of Ethical Business Conduct
  • Requirement to travel as needed across the enterprise, including at times internationally
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

 

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, industrial engineering, or a related field
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) required.
  • Experience and technical knowledge of regulatory compliance (MSHA, OSHA) requirements and risk management.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in safety/occupational health management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role for a multi-site operation, preferably in the aggregates, construction, or mining industry.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and presentation skills with ability to motivate others and connect with a wide array of audiences from frontline to CEO.
  • Experience handling MSHA/OSHA investigations and claims preferred.
  • Strong understanding of occupational health risk assessment, risk mitigation and controls.
  • Ability to exercise vision and sound judgment at both enterprise and division levels. Must be willing to address issues with tact and diplomacy in a timely fashion.
  • Possesses a highly credible balance of technical leadership and people skills to exert influence and network at all levels within the organization.
  • A visible leader who takes a collaborative approach and is present, available, and approachable.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and ability to communicate effectively with regulatory authorities, government officials, major customers/vendors, and senior executives.
  • Successful leadership and hands-on direction of occupational health issues in major operating facilities and business functions that support corporate and divisional led projects.
