Roller Operator - Paving

JOB SUMMARY
The Paving Equipment Operator is an entry-to-intermediate role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy mobile equipment used in the application of asphalt and paving materials. Under the immediate direction of a Lead Person or Supervisor, this individual ensures that materials are spread, leveled, or compacted according to project specifications. The role is critical in maintaining the continuous flow of the paving train and requires a strong commitment to Martin Marietta’s 'Guardian Angel' safety culture, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to perform in a fast-paced, outdoor construction environment.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate specific paving machinery—such as rollers, skid steers, or tack trucks—to spread, smooth, or compact asphalt and aggregate materials on highways, roadways, and parking lots.
- Control the depth of material distributed through the paver and monitor the smoothness of the asphalt mat to eliminate roughness or defects.
- Use levers, pedals, and switches to guide machines along designated forms or GPS guidelines, ensuring precise application.
- Assist in the coordination of truck dumping and maintain a constant flow of material into hoppers or screeds.
- Conduct thorough daily inspections of equipment to ensure safe operational order, documenting findings in accordance with company and OSHA standards.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance, including cleaning, greasing, and fueling equipment.
- Identify and report mechanical malfunctions or repair needs to the Supervisor immediately to minimize downtime.
- Operate all equipment within company guidelines and strictly follow OSHA and DOT safety regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area (housekeeping) to prevent accidents; utilize required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Use hand signals or radio communication to coordinate movements with ground crews, truck drivers, and other operators safely.
- Assist the paving crew with manual labor tasks when not operating equipment, such as shoveling, raking, or setting up traffic control.
- Provide relief or assistance in other plant/site operations (e.g., stockpile maintenance or rail unloading) as requested by management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience
Work Experience
1–3 years of experience operating heavy mobile equipment in the asphalt/paving industry is highly preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
OSHA compliance and regulations

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
Physical Requirements
You must be able to lift up to 50–75 lbs regularly. This includes handling tools, maintenance parts, and debris.
High frequency of climbing ladders/stairs (up to 100 feet for plant inspections), bending, stooping, and kneeling to inspect or grease equipment.
Ability to walk and stand for long periods on uneven, steep, or rough terrain.
Travel
On-site.
Working Conditions
All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 lbs.
