Title:Senior Desktop Support/Systems Administrator

Division:School-wide, Information Technology

Location: Making Waves Academy Richmond

Reports to: Director of Information Technology

Status: Full-time, Exempt (Year-Round)


Position Summary

The role of the Senior Desktop Support/System Administrator will support all aspects of the Windows environment and related technologies. This includes but is not limited to the modification of Group Policy Objects, Windows Updates, Active Directory, VMware, Backups, and related hardware and application software running under the Windows Operating System. This role will also provide desktop computer and technical support for all staff, faculty, and students at the Making Waves Academy campus, and Shared Services.


Primary Responsibilities


Service Desk

  • Process service desk incidents, system change management request, and tracking inventory
  • Provide desktop computer and technical support for all staff, faculty, and students at the Making Waves Academy campus and MWA Shared Services
  • Responsible for the design, maintenance, and support of site-specific system administration such as group policy, print management, and user administration
  • Serve as an escalation point within the support team, providing support and assistance navigating complex support requests
  • Coordinate and lead IT projects and initiatives with the support of the Director of Information Technology


General IT Operations Support

  • Liaison between vendors, technical support and departments to resolve systems or network problems.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, administration, configuration, and reliable operation of user-facing systems, cloud applications, network servers, and virtualization
  • Responsible for tracking and maintaining MWA technology assets in our inventory system as well as assist in conducting quarterly inventory reviews
  • Perform regular backup operations and implement appropriate processes for data protection, disaster recovery, and failover procedures
  • Responsible for the deployment and configuration of MWA technology (i.e. Laptops, Chromebooks, etc.)
  • Assist with onboarding and off-boarding including provisioning/de-provisioning of accounts
  • Assist in maintaining and supporting WAN/LAN/VPN/Cloud/Wireless/VOIP Infrastructure, equipment and related systems when needed
  • Implement, maintain and administer SaaS (Software as a Service)
  • Provide some after-hours, remote and possible on call duty support as needed


General IT Administration

        Design, plan, integrate, tess, implement, document and enhance the physical and logical components of the network.

        Perform system integrations for interoperability over dissimilar platforms and technologies.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional IT environment. This role routinely uses standard IT equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, and smartphones.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to lift IT and AV equipment, walk, climb, bend, sit and/or stand for long time periods.



Some travel required for MWA related events, such as workshops or conferences.




  • Minimum five or more years of work experience related to desktop support and systems administration experience in a business, non-profit, private school or public school



  • Strong knowledge implementing and effectively developing helpdesk and IT operations best practices, including expert knowledge of security, storage, data protection, and disaster recovery protocols
  • Strong knowledge of service desk ticketing systems (ex. SolarWinds, Zendesk or related systems)
  • Excellent working knowledge of Windows Server Active Directory technology
  • Excellent working knowledge of OKTA Administration
  • Excellent knowledge of Windows 10 and Windows Server operating system, MS Office and Google Apps (i.e. Docs, Sheets, etc.) and platform
  • Excellent knowledge of G-Suite and Chrome OS
  • Demonstrate knowledge of VMware & AWS
  • Demonstrate knowledge of MS Office and Google Apps (i.e. Docs, Sheets, etc.)
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task under pressure
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills and the ability to troubleshoot and solve problems quickly
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with scripting and automation tools
  • A proven track record of developing and implementing IT strategy and plans



  • Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience



  • Must have a flexible schedule with the ability to work overtime and some weekends
  • Ability to function effectively within a multi-lingual environment that is ethnically and culturally diverse and student-oriented
  • MCP certification a plus
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred but not required
