The Role:

The responsibilities for this position include mechanical design and development of the entire Gaming product category from the product front end, through product design and launch into successful mass production. The ability to do 3D molding and apply scientific approaches & analysis tools to create robust mechanical designs for volume mass production is required. Additional responsibilities include ensuring product features achieve cost, schedule, reliability, regulatory, and safety goals.

The Surface Audio team is currently recruiting an industry experienced acoustical engineer with a passion for technology to deliver world-class audio solutions for tablet computers. As a member of the audio team, you design and develop acoustic designs for Surface devices and propose solutions to meet best in class performance targets. Applicants will work concurrently with other Surface product team members from product conception to production. The broader product team consists of: Program Managers, Industrial Designers, Acoustics Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Process Engineers, Manufacturing and Test Engineers as well as with other Microsoft internal and external partners.

  • Design, analysis, documentation, and testing of complex mechanical parts and assemblies. Analyze critical areas of design with the use of appropriate analysis tools.

  • The candidate will drive mechanical designs to eliminate noise and rattle due to Mice and Keyboard’s main function, such as clicking, scrolling wheel, gliding.

  • Be responsible for problem solving to ensure design quality and udnerstand root cause for noise issues in the mice and Keybaord, and propose design solutions.

  • To develop the acoustic standard and actuostic test procedure for mice and keyboard. 

  • Play a key role in ensuring the final design meets quality and cost goals and achieves specifications of reliability, manufacturability, and functionality.

  • Partner with Manufacturing teams/Suppliers to ensure our designs are optimized for mass production.

  • Resolve Mechancial and acoustic issues/challenges.

  • Partner and collaborate with other worldwide functions to achieve seamless product development.

  • Launch the development and qualification of plastic tooling, including design debug.

Key Qualifications:

For consideration, you must bring the following minimum skills and behaviors to our team:

  • 4+ years of experience in mechanical design/development of high-volume consumer electronic products.

  • Experience with mechanical noise and vibration mitigation techniques in consumer electronic devices.

  • Familiarity with acoustic test and audio waveform analysis tools.

  • Experience with active noise control and issues around implementation and test.

  • Experience designing mechanical systems to control noise and vibration, debugging of noise and vibration issues.

  • Knowledge of plastic, tooling, injection molding, assembly process, cosmetic finishes, and defect analysis.

  • 3D modeling skills.

  • Good problem-solving skills.

  • Good understanding of risk management.

  • Advanced Knowledge of quality tools such as DFMEA, DFMA, PSS, and Tolerance Analysis.

  • Fluent prototyping skills.

  • Taking initiative in the job.

  • Creative and self-motivated.

  • Good command of English writing and speaking, and the ability to make a file for presentations.


In addition, preferable skills and behaviors include:

  • Preferred Masters or PhD in Applied Acoustics and Vibration

  • Experience with acoustic and vibration virtual prototyping using simulation techniques  FEA,

  • Experience in mouse, keyboard, computer, camera, cell phone, and related consumer electronic products.

  • Experience in the injection-molded plastic industry.



  • Graduate or undergraduate in Mechanical, Acoustic or Engineering Area.
