Documentation Manager
Description
Documentation Manager
Liquid Robotics is seeking a Documentation Manager to lead creation, maintenance, and organization of technical documentation for Wave Glider systems. This on-site role in the Potomac Region will primarily act as a technical writer producing operation and maintenance documentation, training artifacts, and support materials. The Documentation Manager will also manage the documentation library—ensuring version control, archiving, indexing, and customer-portal organization—and maintain templates and processes that ensure documentation quality and traceability.
Essential Responsibilities
- Author and maintain clear, accurate, and user-focused technical documentation for Wave Glider operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and field support.
- Update and produce training artifacts, runbooks, quick-start guides, and instructor materials to support customer training and internal onboarding.
- Create step-by-step procedures, safety notices, and illustrations/photos as required to convey complex technical tasks to technicians and operators.
- Own the documentation library and configuration: maintain version control, indexing, archiving, and lifecycle policies for engineering and field documents.
- Organize and publish documentation offerings on the customer portal and internal knowledge bases; ensure proper access controls and up-to-date content.
- Maintain and improve standardized templates, style guides, and documentation processes to ensure consistency, quality, and regulatory/compliance readiness.
- Coordinate with systems, mechanical, electrical, software, test, manufacturing, QA, and field support teams to collect technical input and validate documentation accuracy.
- Support the collection of technical inputs such as system specifications, performance metrics, and capability summaries as input to marketing materials.
- Track documentation changes related to ECR/ECOs; ensure documentation updates accompany engineering changes and release processes.
- Implement and manage documentation tools and workflows (CMS, DMS, document control systems); train collaborators on proper usage.
- Periodically audit documentation sets for completeness, relevance, and correctness; drive corrective actions to close gaps.
Key Attributes
- Excellent technical writing skills with the ability to explain complex electro-mechanical and software systems in clear, task-oriented language.
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail; able to manage many concurrent documents and revision histories.
- Comfortable working cross-functionally to gather technical details and validate content with engineers and field technicians.
- User-focused mindset: prioritizes clarity, safety, and usability for operators and maintainers.
- Proactive process improver who can standardize templates, naming conventions, and document control practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in Engineering, Technical Communication, English, or related discipline; advanced degree or technical credentials a plus.
- 5+ years of technical writing/documentation experience for complex electro-mechanical or embedded systems (maritime, robotics, aerospace, defense, or similar industries preferred).
- Experience managing document libraries, version control, and release/archival processes in a configuration-controlled environment.
- Proficiency with documentation tools (e.g., content management systems, SharePoint, Confluence, FrameMaker, MadCap Flare, or similar) and familiarity with common graphics/diagram tools.
- Experience producing training materials and converting technical content into concise operator procedures and checklists.
- Familiarity with ECR/ECO and configuration management processes; ability to coordinate documentation updates with engineering change workflows.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work with engineers, QA, manufacturing, and field personnel.
