We’re looking for an experienced Director, Product Design to join our growing team. As the leader of our Design team, you’ll have the opportunity to impact the lives of tens of thousands of learners on the Lessonly platform.

The Director, Product Design works in partnership with other members of the P&E leadership team to shape and execute on product strategy and vision. Your primary responsibilities will be mentoring and coaching a team of designers and researchers while setting the standards, strategies and direction for these disciplines within Lessonly. 

The ideal candidate will have 6+ years experience in product design/research for a B2B SaaS software product, with at least 3 years managing and developing a team. The Director, Product Design will report to the Vice President of Product. 

Daily Responsibilities

  • Management (40%)
    • Success looks like:
      • Build, hire, empower, inspire, and retain a best in class design team that effectively delivers impactful design work that champions the user experience
      • Manage the performance cycle for the team, recommending promotions and bonuses as needed and conducting quarterly reviews to support team members in progress towards their goals.
      • Build and maintain growth frameworks for Design roles, allowing for career development and advancement for the team
      • Conduct regular 1-on-1 team meetings, identifying opportunities for coaching, support and guidance while maintaining a clear balance of accountability and autonomy.
      • Partner with the engineering, product, and QA leads to ensure strong UX across product experiences.
      • Foster an inclusive design culture.
      • Lead, inspire and mentor teams; promote their work, guide them, and bring them to the next level

  • Design Leadership (40%)
    • Success looks like:
      • Define the Product Design practice, providing creative thought leadership to company strategy.
      • Set the bar for design and research quality and output, advocate for design values, facilitate and manage design processes and practices.
      • Create and champion a user experience vision, along with a plan for evolutionary, iterative steps to get there
      • Establish and iteratively evolve experiential and UI consistency and quality across product
      • Develop and implement repeatable processes that promote design excellence such as rapid iteration, prototyping, design sprints, and design systems.



  • Design Enablement (20%)
    • Success looks like:
      • Establish and maintain a sustainable, robust, component-based design system
      • Enhance the performance and skill set of your team by promoting mentoring and educational opportunities
      • Ensure systems, software, processes, and budget in place to scale and improve team's operational efficiency

About You: 

  • Critical Requirements:
  • 6+ years of experience designing interactions and UI for digital products that deliver on business goals.  (Nice to have: Experience conducting and managing user research programs at scale)
  • 3+ years or experience managing and developing teams with a track record for recruiting and mentoring high-performing teams.
  • A portfolio showing your design thinking and your ability to create user-friendly designs for millions of people
  • Experience working with a Design System
  • You lead with clarity and vision, and you can motivate others to deliver excellent results while keeping them happy and engaged
  • Track record of influencing product and engineering functions to keep user problems top-of-mind and invest in holistic, user centered solutions
  • You enjoy continuously learning more about design and teaching what you know to others
  • Comfortable with a fast pace and driving clarity from ambiguity
  • Product Design Fundamentals
  • Understand a business/design problem, dream big on how to solve that problem, consider what an MVP might be of that solution, and help your teammates and stakeholders understand that vision.
  • Strong design foundation in both UI (interaction, visual) and UX (user research, analysis, information architecture, wireframing)
  • Proficiency in at least one screen design tool and one prototyping tool. If it’s not Sketch and InVision, you’re willing to learn Sketch and InVision.
  • Be open to feedback, be willing to give feedback with grace. We think amazing things happen when we riff off of each other’s ideas.
  • Realistic, User Journey-Driven Design: Thinking through the complete experience when tasked with a design challenge. Ability to build and support the proposed solution.
