Overview
Most legal decisions that shape someone's life: starting a business, protecting a family, securing an asset, still happen without any expert guidance. We're changing that. At LegalZoom, we're building a new category of AI-powered legal experience, and this role is a founding leadership position in that effort. You'll be the engineering leader shaping how millions of people get real, intelligent help navigating the legal system, not maintaining a product, but inventing one. You will own a significant engineering workstream in our SF Bay Area hub, partnering closely with Product, Design, Data, and AI Enablement to ship high-quality, reliable AI applications that are deeply embedded in our core DIY and DIFM products. Your team will blend strong full-stack engineering with modern AI capabilities to deliver intuitive, safe, and measurable AI app experiences end-to-end.
You will
Build
- Design, build, and operate customer-facing AI applications , conversational flows, copilots, and embedded assistants across web and mobile.
- Own end-to-end delivery of agentic workflows, from problem framing through architecture, implementation, and production operations.
- Set and uphold high engineering standards for code quality, system design, performance, and security , especially for workflows that act on behalf of users.
Ship
- Partner with Product and Design to define roadmaps, scope, and success metrics for AI-powered features , balancing speed with safety, reliability, and legal/financial regulatory constraints.
- Drive experimentation and use data to validate impact, inform tradeoffs, and remove blockers that slow delivery.
- Bring a builder's mindset: you're comfortable with ambiguity, move fast when the path is unclear, and treat your team's work like your own product.
Lead
- Develop and mentor engineers and senior engineers , coaching with clear frameworks, setting high expectations, and fostering a culture of ownership and psychological safety.
- Staff the right people on the highest-impact initiatives, balancing technical depth, stakeholder management, and delivery skills.
- Champion a diverse, inclusive, high-performing engineering culture across the SF Bay Area and distributed teams.
Influence
- Partner with AI Enablement and Data teams to build on shared platforms , agent orchestration, RAG pipelines, safety/eval harnesses , rather than bespoke one-offs.
- Drive cross-functional alignment with Engineering, Product, Operations, and Compliance leaders.
- Communicate clearly with senior stakeholders, translating complex AI systems into concise narratives and recommendations.
You have
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years managing product engineering teams
- A track record of shipping AI-powered products , LLM-based assistants, copilots, or agentic workflows, with real users and measurable impact.
- Strong full-stack foundations: you can credibly lead architecture decisions and code reviews, not just manage them.
- Experience designing multi-step agentic workflows that act on behalf of users across tools, APIs, or services.
- The ability to move fast in ambiguity, you've led teams where the roadmap was still forming and shipped anyway.
- A founder's communication style: you translate complex technical tradeoffs into clear recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.
