The Herald & Review is seeking an ambitious reporter to cover government in Central Illinois.
This position is focused on public entities at the county and local level. Reporting ranges from quick-turn enterprise pieces to long-range, deep dives on trends and issues.
Key to this job is making the decisions of government relevant to our growing audience.
The Herald & Review is proud of our watchdog focus. We recently won the Knight Chair Award for Best Investigative/Enterprise Reporting from the Illinois Press Association, one of 13 statewide honors earned this year, and our website was recognized last month in the Local Media Association Digital Innovation Awards. We also were one of Editor & Publisher's "10 That Do It Right" for 2019.
We value meaningful and memorable journalism that focuses on the voices of real people, has a sense of place and starts conversations.
Decatur is about halfway between Chicago and St. Louis. We offer a beautiful lake, charming downtown and lots of topics for a hungry journalist to explore.
This position includes some general assignment work, as well as occasional weekend shifts.
