Director of Engineering

Position Overview


The Director of Engineering leads the engineering department, plays an active role in the development and completion of projects, meets with and reports back to upper management, plans and monitors project schedules, and works with multiple and diverse teams. Additional responsibilities include aligning engineering activities and projects with company goals and objectives, providing expert guidance and support, approving newly-developed engineering plans, and maintaining positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Ideal candidates will have experience identifying and navigating organizational changes and a keen interest in international trends in engineering and leadership.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the engineering leader and technical expert.
  • Member of the upper management team.
  • Implementing best practice engineering methods.
  • Providing clear and concise instructions, technical guidance, and support to the engineering team.
  • Helping to solve engineering issues as they arise.
  • Finding and implementing ways to improve cost-efficiency.
  • Research and develop new designs and products.
  • Planning and executing strategies for completing projects on time.
  • Create detailed engineering plans, processes, and procedures for engineering staff to use and abide by.
  • Propose and oversee budgets, timelines, and scope of work for engineering projects.
  • Check and confirm the accuracy of the work performed and the methods used by engineering staff.
  • Conduct various tests and quality assurance checks to verify the quality of completed projects.
  • Hire, train, and supervise engineering staff members.
  • Spearhead various research and development initiatives to identify opportunities for new projects and improved processes.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other managers, customers, and other project stakeholders, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Prepare and deliver various engineering-related presentations, both internally and externally.
  • Interface closely with mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineers within a team setting.
  • Ability to scope and seek out external consulting partners for civil, structural, HVAC, fire protection, and other engineering disciplines.


Reports To


The position will report directly to the President and will also report to the Vice President of Engineering.


The candidate should be an experienced engineer with proven supervisory and technical skills. The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Master’s degree in engineering, engineering management, or business administration preferred. An Electrical Engineering background is also preferred but not required.
  • Senior-level engineering experience, ideally in a management role.
  • Analytical and mathematical mind, capable of evaluating and solving various complex problems.
  • Strong leadership skills are necessary to manage and develop a team.
  • Organizational competencies and project management skills to keep projects, processes, and the entire engineering team on track.
  • Experience with utility interconnection regulations, codes and standards, and permitting requirements for MW-scale distributed generation power systems, including energy storage systems.
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery bank designs from top-tier manufacturers, including installation, commissioning, operation, and relevant safety requirements.
  • Design of AC and DC power circuits, including sizing, raceways, grounding, protection, and EMI mitigation.
  • Experience performing load flow, short-circuit, relay coordination, and arc flash hazard calculations using SKM Power Tools or equivalent.
  • Specification of utility interconnection equipment for DG, including inverters and transformers.
  • Specification of control devices, including PLCs, RTACs, communications network equipment
  • Experience with revenue meters, protective relays, circuit breakers, and SCADA systems.
  • Experience with design and operation of Microgrids (islanded power systems with grid-tied capability).
  • Familiar with CAD drafting standards and development of drawing plan sets and submittal packages for commercial, utility, and state/federal Government clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the energy storage industry.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management, and other co-workers.
  • Hearing and vision within normal ranges with or without corrective lenses or an assistive device.
  • Some heavy lifting is expected; occasional exertion of up to 25 lbs. of force may be required.
  • Good manual dexterity is required to use computers, mobile devices, and other productivity technologies.
  • The job is primarily performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Extended periods of sitting and extensive work at a computer and phone are normal.
  • Secondary job requirements include travel with fieldwork.
