Based out of Grand Rapids, MI, the Learning & Communications Specialist is responsible for the effective and consistent design, development, coordination, and delivery of learning, communications, and change management initiatives to meet business needs. This Learning and Communications Specialist will also have the opportunity to be engaged in other HR initiatives to support department needs, such as Employee Relations, Open Enrollment, and Talent Management. Reporting to the Organizational Effectiveness (OE) Director, this individual contributor will work directly with the entire HR team, business line functional leaders and line staff on a regular basis. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities of the Learning & Communications Specialist will consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

Learning & Development:

  • Partner with the Organizational Effectiveness Director in the design of a learning and development strategy and technology implementations
  • Assess training needs through surveys, interviews with stakeholders, or consultations with hr colleagues, managers or instructors
  • Develop training programs and solutions to develop managers and employees in alignment to the needs of the business
  • Participate in the implementation of a new HRIS system, with a focus on the successful design and adoption of the Learning module
  • Ensure that the programs and training materials developed are instructionally sound and that the concepts and materials are consistent and interconnected across all programs
  • Assist in the selection, management, development and evaluation of training vendors and consultants to ensure the efficient operation of the function
  • Identify and implement best practices in learning and development through benchmarking, networking, and industry knowledge
  • Schedules educational/training sessions with department directors and employees to explain policies and ensure compliance as needed
  • Assist in the design and development of team effectiveness offerings, and educational/training sessions with department directors and employees to explain policies
  • Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling classes, setting up systems and equipment, and coordinating enrollment

Communications & Change Management

  • Partner with Organizational Effectiveness Director to develop and execute the employee communications strategy.
  • Manage the organizational internal communications methods, including mass email communications, digital signage and intranet pages.
  • Partner with members of the HR team and business to develop and manage internal communication campaigns (e.g. wellness)
  • Provide change management support to drive awareness and adoption of key organizational initiatives
  • Create a change management shift by understanding what matters to people and inspiring passion in others, encouraging connection to purpose, and promote the adoption of practice and evidence-based learning from the bottom up and top down
  • Define metrics to assess the effectiveness of communication methods, and make continuous improvement enhancements to the format, content and delivery of communications

Other HR Involvement

  • Support the HR Team by engaging in Employee Relations, Open Enrollment, Talent Management and other areas to support the team. This may include:
    • Working closely with the HR Business Partner and OE Director to investigate a variety of Human Resources related issues, EEOC complaints, Wage and Hour, Harassment, ADA, Discrimination, employee disputes, etc. to ensure that effective, legally compliant resolutions are arrived at in a timely manner and within organizational guidelines
    • Assisting with the open enrollment process and employee meetings; coordination of yearly processes including year-end closing, yearly rate and pay schedule adjustments, work year calendars, etc.
    • Providing consultation on talent processes, such as succession management, talent assessment, selection processes, training and development, career management, performance management
    • Interfaces and assists with the recognition programs and partners with Leadership to identify and implement effective retention strategies
    • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Work Experience: Two (2) years’ experience in a learning and development role; one (1) year facilitation experience in both classroom and virtual environments; significant breadth of knowledge on commonly used training concepts, adult learning, instructional design, interventions, practices, and procedures
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Organization Development, Communications, Human Resources or related field
  • Computer Skills: Intermediate MS Office PowerPoint, Word and Excel skills; Previous experience with a learning management system (LMS)
  • Organization Skills: Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and shift priorities as needed; proven ability to work collaboratively and amidst ambiguity;

  • Travel Requirements: Ability to travel up to 10% of the time

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience: Five (5) years’ experience in a learning and development role; Two (2) years facilitation experience in both classroom and virtual environments; Three (3) years’ experience in Human Resources and employee relations; Two (2) years’ experience in human resources in a manufacturing and warehouse environment; Two (2) years of Organizational Development (OD), talent management, and leadership development experience;
  • Education: Advanced degree in industrial/organizational psychology, organization development, human behavior or related fields or equivalent is strongly preferred; professional certifications and designations are highly desired
  • Computer Skills: Prior experience working with an HRIS system
