Hiring Range: $24.94 - $30.55

General Summary of DutiesDevelopmental Disabilities Counselor functions as a member of a multidisciplinary team while demonstrating the clinical skill and experience to plan, develop, coordinate, and provide treatment, rehabilitation, and support services to program clients. The person in this position strives to improve the operations of KMHS in support of its stated mission as well as to provide the highest Level of customer service. Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Major Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Attend DDA meetings as requested by DDA and KMHS Personnel. Attend KMHS treatment team meetings as requested. Coordinate case staffing when required.
  • Provide liaison services between DDA and other community resources.
  • Participate in daily staff organizational meetings and treatment planning review meetings, as requested.
  • Facilitate communication between KMHS staff and DDA staff to ensure treatment continuity and successful integration in the community.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the use of the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Possess the ability and knowledge necessary to work effectively with complex cases involving multiple diagnoses and substance abuse issues, developmental disabilities and medical conditions.
  • Provide coordination services for an assigned group of clients. Provide direct services such as individual, group, family counseling, crisis intervention, and case management to assigned clients.
  • Participate in providing information to clients on substance use issues such as mental and physical health and daily functioning. Coordinate treatment with internal and external substance use treatment providers.
  • Assist clients with gaining resources and education to support their autonomy and basic needs.
  • Work collaboratively with community partners. Work closely, as needed, with family members and advocacy support groups.
  • Provide crisis intervention counseling and coordinate with Designated Crisis Responders/crisis services when appropriate.
  • Document client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established policies and procedures.
  • Consult with families and community agencies such as DDA, DSHS, court systems, housing authorities, ETC. to maintain coordination in the treatment process.
  • Establish and maintain effective and positive relationships with KMHS staff and DDA staff, collaborating with staff frequently on the best treatment plan strategies.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to integrate behavioral health services with primary care.
  • Request, gather, and coordinate information from all sources on prospective clients in order to facilitate appropriate treatment decisions.
  • Document all clinical services thoroughly and accurately and submit all documentation in a timely manner per agency policy and contractual/WAC requirements.
  • Demonstrate ability to work efficiently in a managed care environment, organizing and prioritizing workload, and managing multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of current intake and treatment approaches for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, social services, or behavioral health field.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year of job-related experience. The capacity to work well with children and families.

An essential and required task of this position is driving clients in a personal vehicle on behalf of the agency; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in the state of Washington, and have reliable, insured transportation.

LICENSURE: Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration.

 

Preferred Qualifications: In-depth knowledge of and experience with I/DD population, outstanding communication abilities, collaboration and administrative skills, and a high degree of professional insight and knowledge.

 

Performance Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Maintain a working knowledge of current trends in community mental health, including health care reform and automation of job tasks using computer technology.
  2. Maintain a working knowledge of mental health rehabilitation standards.

SKILLS:

  1. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, clients, organizations, and the public.
  2. Communication Communicates clearly and concisely.
  3. Computer skills Ability to operate a personal computer, fax machine, printer, and copier proficiently.

  3. Able to assist in building positive working relationships with staff of all agency departments.

 

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

 

Work Environment: Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.

 

Mental/Physical RequirementsWhile performing the job duties, the employee is required to walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with arms, talk, or listen.  Peripheral vision is also required for this position.
