Data Manager, KIPP Forward

Regional Support Office Oakland, California

Description

About the Data & Evaluation Team

We want every layer of our organization -- from our Executive Team to our teachers -- to feel empowered by data, and ready to learn and grow from it so that we can best support our students, families, and staff.

Position Overview

We are looking for a Data Manager to join our relentlessly curious, entrepreneurial regional Data and Evaluation team. We are looking for a data evangelist, who can dive into data sets to uncover key insights, build and enhance data tools to address key questions and needs, and are ready to steward a data culture grounded in inquiry and continuous learning. This individual will lead many of our KIPP Forward data initiatives including: administration and stewardship of our alumni data and systems, analysis and tool building to support our KIPP Forward team, and capacity building to shepherd data inquiry and data-informed decision-making. This is a highly collaborative position, as the Data Manager will work cross-functionally with several members of the KIPP Forward team, Data Team, and our Marketing and Development teams. The ideal candidate will be an analytical, resourceful problem-solver, flexible team player, and a skilled communicator. They will report to our regional Associate Director of Data & Evaluation and be based in our Regional Support Office in downtown Oakland (BART-accessible).

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

With support from the Data and Evaluation team, the Data Manager will be responsible for:

Data Systems & Stewardship:

  • Support administration of our alumni database systems including our Salesforce instance, and Google Sheet data collection tools, with a focus on maintaining accurate, complete records we can use to inform alumni supports and the strategic direction of KIPP Forward.
  • Ensure we are getting the most value out of these systems by staying up-to-date on their data collection, reporting, and administration capabilities, and advocating to KIPP Foundation for feature enhancements aligned to our strategies.
  • Develop and maintain SQL reporting views within our data warehouse to facilitate analysis, data products, and reporting.
  • Steward our data by developing data quality systems for auditing our alumni infrastructure/tools.
  • Steward our data by facilitating stepback conversations with stakeholders to audit changes to our key definitions and business practices, so that we can keep our data collection methods, progress monitoring tools, and goals aligned.
  • Contribute to our internal team’s knowledge management systems, documentation practices, and code review process to ensure that we build and maintain infrastructure sustainably.

Data Analysis and Products:

  • Analyze alumni data, by keeping a pulse on trends across our domains of post-secondary Match, Persistence, and Career, and preparing quarterly attainment results to facilitate inquiry and data dives.
  • Partner closely with our KIPP Forward team to iteratively design, build, and prune tools and processes, in SQL, Google Sheets, and Tableau, that help our organization to make better decisions and give folks time back to focus on their best work.
  • Leverage Agile development and product management best practices to balance stakeholder feature requests with a need to deliver minimum viable products to ensure best use of organizational resources.
  • Perform root cause analysis to ensure solutions solve underlying problems and not just surface level symptoms.
  • Lead components of external data requests in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Use Tableau, Google Apps, SQL, Python, Django web framework, or other tools to customize and create powerful, sustainable, and user-friendly tools and analyses to support this work.

Capacity Building:

  • Partner closely with stakeholders to build their data stewardship and data literacy capabilities, developing training resources for the most common requests, issues and correcting misunderstandings about the data when you observe them.
  • Support the KIPP Forward Leadership team in developing data protocols to facilitate inquiry and data dives.

Data Strategy:

  • Partner with the Associate Director of Data and Evaluation and the KIPP Forward Leadership team to gather input and requirements to inform our KIPP Forward data road map.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to plan and prioritize short-term and long-term analytic and systems needs.
