Associate Director of Academics, Social Studies (Part-Time)

Position Summary
The Social Studies Associate Director of Academics’s role is to guide, coach, and influence leaders within our region to operate high achieving schools for all of our students. As an academics team, we set the academic direction, develop Assistant Principals and Content Specialists at our schools, and create and maintain academic systems that align with our academic vision. 

This position reports to the Director of Academics, is based out of our Regional Support Office (RSO) in Oakland, and will play a critical role within KIPP Public Schools. This position requires frequent travel between our schools throughout the Bay Area. This is a part-time position of approximately 20 hours per week.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 3 to 5 years teaching experience with exemplary results
  • 2+ years of instructional leadership experience supervising teachers at a K-12 School
  • 4+ years of teaching experience at a K-12 school with strong results - HS teaching experience preferred. 
  • Experience working in a High School or Middle School
  • Previous work with ELL students or students who have learning gaps


  • Bachelor’s Degree (required); Master’s Degree (preferred)

Knowledge/skills required:

  • Curricular and instructional leadership experience and demonstrated ability to lead high quality professional development and coach teachers and or leaders
  • Proven track record of school-based leadership (grade level or department chair) with outstanding results
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and build relationships across teams
  • Ability to self-direct, prioritize and multi-task among competing goals; Strong ability to think strategically and prioritize 
  • Excellent oral and written communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP NorCal’s mission and values
  • A deep passion for social justice and equity for all children; a strong belief that all students can achieve at the highest levels regardless of demography
  • Self-starter, comfortable in a fast-paced environment
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Work with the Associate Director of Middle School Academics and the Associate Director of HS Academics, and school-based Social Studies leaders to sustain the work of KIPP NorCal Social Studies. 
  • Provide differentiated support, resources, and direction as they build instruction aligned to our HSS Vision and Core Beliefs and our regional vision of Anti-racist, equitable, academically excellent schools
  • Serve as a resident expert by holding a deep content knowledge, instructional materials and resources 
  • Structure opportunities with APs/Content Lead to strengthen core pedagogical practices through content meeting Scope and Sequence, walkthrough/observation goals, and initial coaching plans
  • Collaborate with SS Leads in HS and MS to determine needs for Phase 2 of this work, including summer PD and FY23 goals, and support the A-team in connecting this work to the larger FY23 priorities
  • Lead 1-on-1 coaching or group coaching for 5-8 Social Studies
  • Manage Social Studies Regional Content Teacher leads who support with SS-specific initiatives 

Middle School work and deliverables include:

  • Support the execution and analysis of common HAT Interim assessments for grades 5-8.
  • Sustain APs/Content Leads investment in regional 5-8 HSS Vision + Core Values 
  • Sustain collaborative relationships with Stanford History Education Group to provide schools with commonHSS assessments (HATs) as well as to support schools in analyzing the resulting student work and planning instructional supports or shifts

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses, and hold meetings in different spaces. Traditionally, much of the day involves sitting. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-20 lbs.

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: Office and/or classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions.  Occasional classroom/school environment and travel. In an emergency context (e.g., pandemic), work may be conducted virtually fully or partially for extended periods of time or longer, and the expectation is that the individual will establish a productive, remote work environment (e.g., ability to stay connected through different technology means). It may require remote work as current public health guidelines warrant.

Classification and Calendar
This is a part-time (approximately 20 hours per week), non-exempt position role based on the regional support calendar and time-off policy.
