Position Summary

The Associate Director of Early Elementary Academics will work closely with the Director of Academics, the Managing Director of Schools, and the Associate Director of 3-8 Academics to provide curricular and instructional leadership in the development, implementation, coordination, and assessment of the early elementary academic program to improve student achievement and meet student, school, and regional goals. More specifically, the Associate Director of Early Elementary School Academics will be responsible for creating a clearer vision and long-term plan for supporting high quality math and literacy instruction aligned to Common Core standards and Next Generation Science Standards. In addition, the Associate Director of Early Elementary School Academics will oversee regional learning for early elementary schools to ensure a standard of excellence and impact. 

As an academics team, we set the academic direction, develop Assistant Principals and Content Specialists at our schools, and create and maintain academic systems that align with our academic vision. This position reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning, is based out of our Regional Support Office (RSO) in Oakland, and will play a critical role within KIPP NorCal Public Schools. This position requires frequent travel between our schools throughout Northern California. We are looking for someone to start immediately. 

Qualifications & Skills

Experience

  • A minimum of 4 years of instructional leadership experience (e.g. Assistant principal, teacher leader) with demonstrated exemplary results
  • At least 3 years teaching experience with exemplary results
  • Curriculum development experience 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach and manage teachers and leaders
  • Experience working with underserved communities

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required); Master’s Degree (preferred)

Essential Functions

Setting the Vision for our Early Elementary Schools

  • Evaluate the performance of our early elementary schools through classroom observations, school reviews, data analysis, and  to determine highest leverage strategic priorities that will increase student achievement.
  • Build consensus with SLs around those priorities.
  • Develop a plan for implementing the priorities, including key milestones, metrics for success, and a timeline of key actions.

Coaching and Professional Development

  • Structure opportunities with Assistant Principals/Content Leads to strengthen core pedagogical practices through content meeting Scope and Sequence, walkthrough/observation goals, and initial coaching plans
  • Plan and lead regional professional development for teachers and leaders on best practices in Literacy Instruction and learning, including the use of formative assessments and other data to inform instruction
  • Coach teachers and leaders in the use of research-based instructional strategies and best practices aligned to regional academics priorities 
  • Provide regular feedback to school leadership based on observations of classroom instruction, content teams, and school-based professional development.
  • Plan and facilitate bi-weekly professional learning communities with our Assistant Principals to support their content and pedagogical development. 

Content and Curriculum Expertise

  • Serve as resident expert by holding a deep knowledge of TK-2 content, Common Core Standards, instructional materials and resources -- this expertise can be in Math or Literacy
  • Lead the development and implementation of region’s vision for high school literacy and/or math
  • Support the implementation of regional curriculum
  • Provide differentiated support, resources, and direction as they build instruction aligned to our Academic Literacy Vision and Core Beliefs and our regional vision of anti-racist, equitable, academically excellent schools

Academics Partnerships

  • Partner with Operations team, Data team, and SpEd teams to continue to develop and refine a robust assessment system for elementary schools, that includes various metrics for growth and achievement
  • Partner with KIPP Foundation colleagues to support early elementary initiatives and assess their impact
  • Manage team members and/or consultants, as needed

Physical, Mental and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses, and hold meetings in different spaces. Traditionally, much of the day involves sitting. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-20 lbs.

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: Office and/or classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions.  Occasional classroom/school environment and travel. In an emergency context (e.g., pandemic), work may be conducted virtually fully or partially for extended periods of time or longer, and the expectation is that the individual will establish a productive, remote work environment (e.g., ability to stay connected through different technology means). It may require remote work as current public health guidelines warrant.

Classification and Calendar

This is a full-time, exempt position role based on the regional support calendar and time-off policy.
