Content Director, News

Content Santa Monica, California

Description

Who we are

KCRW is a public media leader, creating and curating a unique mix of content centered around music discovery, NPR news, cultural exploration and informed public affairs. We are driven by the spirit of Los Angeles and deliver in innovative ways -- on the radio, digitally and in person -- to diverse, curious communities around the corner and around the world.

What we need

The Content Director, News position at KCRW is editorial, strategic and managerial; the position is responsible for KCRW’s news and news-related coverage — including radio, podcast, social, web and other digital platforms.

The role reports to the President, working hand-in-hand with all KCRW departments—particularly Culture, Music, Communications, Operations, Development — to ensure KCRW makes incredible content that brings KCRW closer to its goals.

These goals are clear: tell important stories, find new audiences, delight and grow existing ones, and build an engaged community around what we do.

The Content Director, News leads a team of editors, producers, reporters and hosts, helping them make important work that informs and entertains. As a leader in the newsroom, they will uphold the highest standards of ethics and professional conduct. They will lead by example and get hands-on with news content when needed but will oversee a team of managers who themselves supervise, train and mentor talented journalists. As a leader in the KCRW content team, they will work with colleagues to devise new multiplatform properties or initiatives, and improve existing ones so they fit our goals better. They’ll be comfortable working toward specific, measurable targets of audience growth and engagement, and will be able to interpret audience data to understand how to improve our content, and to discern new opportunities for shows and properties that will serve the public better.

KCRW exists to celebrate the genius of all Southern California’s communities. The Content Director, Culture knows diversity is key to our success—the more amazing people and stories we publish, the more people we reach—which means more opportunities to grow. Our new CD will be able to engage in many contexts with sensitivity and respect, and will have a hunger for growing KCRW’s relevance far beyond the typical NPR audience.

This is a full-time, managerial, exempt position.
