Role Description

The Cafeteria Worker is a crucial member of the food service team responsible for providing excellent customer service and ensuring the smooth operation of a cafeteria or food establishment. this role involves serving food to customers, food preparation under chef supervision, maintaining cleanliness and organization in the cafeteria, handling cash transactions, and creating a positive dining experience for all patrons.

 

Responsibilities

Food Service and Customer Interaction

  • Greet customers warmly and provide friendly and efficient service
  • Serve food items, beverages, and snacks to customers, ensuring accuracy in portioning and presentation
  • Answer customer inquiries about menu items, ingredients, and special dietary requirements
  • Handle customer feedback and resolve any complaints or concerns with professionalism and courtesy

 

Cash Handling and Point-Of-Sales (POS) Operations

  • Operate the cash register or pos system to process transactions accurately
  • Handle cash, credit card, or electronic payment transactions following established procedures
  • Issue receipts and ensure proper recording of sales
  • Maintain cash register floats and reconcile cash at the end of the shift

 

Cafeteria Set-Up and Cleanliness

  • Assist in setting up the cafeteria for service, including arranging tables, chairs, and condiments
  • Keep the dining area clean, tidy, and well-maintained during service hours
  • Clear and clean tables promptly after customers finish their meals
  • Monitor and restock condiment stations, napkins, and utensils as needed

 

Food Safety and Hygiene

  • Follow food safety guidelines and ensure proper handling, storage, and serving of food items
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitation in the cafeteria, including cleaning surfaces, floors, and equipment regularly
  • Monitor food temperatures and report any issues to the supervisor immediately

 

Food Preparation Assistance

  • Assist the kitchen staff in preparing ingredients, such as chopping vegetables, peeling fruits, and portioning food items
  • Help with basic cooking tasks, such as boiling pasta, grilling sandwiches, or frying simple dishes under supervision
  • Ensure all food preparation areas are kept clean and organized

 

Cleaning and Sanitization

  • Maintain a clean and tidy kitchen by washing dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • Clean kitchen surfaces, countertops, and floors regularly to uphold hygiene standards
  • Empty trash bins and ensure proper waste disposal

 

Stock Management

  • Assist in receiving, unpacking, and storing food supplies, ensuring proper rotation and FIFO (first-in, first-out) system
  • Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors when supplies are running low
  • Help in restocking shelves and fridges as needed

 

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a kitchen or food service environment
  • Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift heavy objects
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities
