Communications Specialist

Description

The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and disseminating compelling communications to Kal Tire’s audiences, both external and internal. This individual has a solid understanding of the communications discipline and understands how to work effectively with many stakeholders. This role works closely with the communications team to pro-actively manage and build Kal Tire’s reputation in all mediums.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications

  • Writes briefs for communications projects to define objectives, tactics and measurement
  • Executes communication plans efficiently, creatively and effectively
  • Creates audience-centric messages
  • Ensures measurements are established for all communication initiatives
  • Earns the confidence of internal stakeholders
  • Listens through social media, research and other channels to identify opportunities to initiate or improve communications

Content

  • Curates and drafts compelling content to support communications initiatives
  • Assists in the development of content assets for social media

Social Media

  • Supports the development of key influencer programs
  • Provides support to the Communications Coordinator for all elements related to social media
  • Assists in development of social media reporting, and also has a good understanding of data analytics and develops insights to influence future actions
  • Provides backup support to managing social media channels when the Communications Coordinator is unavailable

Media Relations

  • Supports in the development of media relations activities
  • Organizes press events and contributes to the development of media materials
  • Effectively researches media relations topics
  • Builds media lists
  • Ensures spokespeople are properly prepared for media interviews
  • Liaises with media as required, including; pitching, managing incoming requests, coordinating interviews, etc.
  • Monitors industry news for opportunity potential
  • Manages the media monitoring platform: tracking, monitoring, tagging, and reporting

Internal Communications

  • Oversees the daily operation of the Operations Portal
  • Supports the development of other internal communications initiatives as required

Crisis Management

  • Participates in crisis communications planning, training and execution as required
  • Stays abreast of issues and opportunities for Kal Tire
  • When required, facilitates resolution control

Measurement

  • Responsible for regular reporting for earned media
  • Supports Supervisor, Communications in monthly dashboard reporting

Other

  • Develops corporate presentations as required
  • Other related projects and duties as assigned

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in communications / public relations
  • Experience creating and implementing social media programs
  • Experience working with the media

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Takes an active interest in new trends and emerging technologies
  • Strong understanding of multiple social media platforms, impacts of their algorithms, and what it takes to engage with audiences online
  • Familiarity with social media and earned media monitoring and measurement platforms
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Strong inter-personal skills
  • Contributes to continuous improvement for all communications

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor Degree in Business or Communications or equivalent education and experience

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Willingness to travel
  • Overtime as required

NEGOTIABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Professional accreditation and/or membership in IABC, CPRS or equivalent is an asset
  • Knowledge of issue communications is an asset
  • Knowledge of web analytics
  • Knowledge of SharePoint and design applications is an asset
