Role Description
 
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Manager, Canada Operations Accounting (“Manager”) is primarily responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of Kal Tire’s Canadian businesses at the departmental and divisional levels. They will ensure accurate, timely and compliant financial reporting in accordance with IFRS.  
 
This role leads core accounting functions, drives process improvements, and partners with operational teams to support efficient and effective financial management.
 
The Manager directly oversees two Supervisors, who in turn are responsible for supervising the work of six accountants. This role is accountable for ensuring effective delegation, oversight, and performance across the full operational accounting team.
 
Core Responsibilities
 
Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop two Supervisors, ensuring effective oversight of the broader operational accounting team. 
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations across all levels of the team. 
  • Act as a key point of contact with divisional management to address operational accounting and financial issues, providing accounting insight and leadership to support decision-making and resolve complex matters. 
  • Contributes to a culture that reflects the Kal Tire AIMS and supports team member development, engagement, and a positive work environment.  
  • Supports continuous improvement and growth initiatives through the Reporting remit. 
  • Assesses staffing requirements and makes recommendations to the Assistant Controller, if required.
 
Accounting and Financial Reporting
 
  • Ensure all accounting activities comply with IFRS and internal accounting policies.
  • Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end operational accounting close processes.
  • Oversee the preparation of working papers for the annual external audit.
  • Review higher risk journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Review branch level, divisional, and legal entity financial statements for entities domiciled in Canada, working with the tax department as required.
  • Undertake analysis and resolution of more complex/non-routine accounting issues, which may include acquisition accounting and documentation of key accounting positions.
  • Identify internal control gaps and make recommendations to the Assistant Controller. 
Finance Business Process and System Improvements
 
  • Seeks opportunities to automate or streamline business processes and collaborates with other business units to improve business processes.
  • Works with Information Systems stakeholders, researches and analyses potential solutions to business needs and performs fit-gap assessment of solutions to business needs.
  • Maps “as is” and “to be” business processes using industry standard tools such as process maps, flow charts, use cases, etc.
 
Financial Performance Analysis for Management Decision Making
 
  • Understands Kal Tire’s business and processes from a Finance perspective.
  • Collaborates with all levels of Management to understand what information is needed for business decision-making.
  • Analyzes data and summarizes findings in a manner that clearly identifies key business performance issues, facilitating efficient and effective management decision making.
 
Work Experience
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in public practice working on large public company audit engagements.
  • Minimum 5 years supervising or leading teams.

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong technical IFRS knowledge with a history of pragmatic application in-line with the needs of financial information users.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
  • Ability to evaluate complex business and accounting issues.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Excel.
  • Experience with full-feature accounting systems.
  • Experience with developing Power BI dashboards would be a plus.
 
Education
  • CPA designation is required.
