The Lab Technician position is based out of our Geode Boar Stud located in Danville, Iowa. This position is responsible for assisting the farm in meeting production goals while promoting safety and wellbeing of animals, self, and other team members This position will understand swine nutrition, selection, genetics, animal welfare, and animal handling under direct supervision
Essential Functions:

- Take an active role in safety program including following safety procedures, enforcement of policy and continued training.
- Perform all required duties in a timely manner as outlined in the S.O.P (Standard Operating Procedure).
- Ability to help evaluate boars.
- Daily organization to accomplish all tasks within the lab.
- Facilitate timely actions in response to any external or internal production related reports concerning customer expectations.
- Proficient at semen collection.
- Effectively work to make sure both internal and external quality of product is meeting customer expectations.
- Maintains clean, sterile laboratory.
- Ability to order and receive necessary products and supplies to have available to complete tasks.
- Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
- Documents information by maintaining daily logs and equipment record books.
- Resolves problems by examining and evaluating data; selecting corrective steps.
- Accept ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- All other duties as may be assigned.

Job Qualifications:
- Be able to lift in excess of 50 pounds up to 100 yards.
- Push and/or pull a minimum of 500 pounds in a cart with wheels when required.
- Squat to floor, grip small objects with ease and twist at least 45 degrees.
- Capable of repeated motions.
- Ability to operate a computer and send reports on a weekly basis.
- Be responsive to visible signs of animal discomfort.
- Be responsive to verbal alarms and sounds of animals.
- Be able to understand, retain and perform oral and written instructions in English.
- Able to communicate orally and in writing with other employees and company contacts.
- Ability to walk, stand and squat for long periods of time on different surfaces including concrete and slats.
- Ability to climb in and out of crates and over obstacles.
- Maintain balance on all surfaces.
- Must not own or live near any swine. Must not live with anyone who has contact with swine.
Working Conditions:
- During summer months outside temperatures can be over 100° F for entire scheduled work day.
- During winter months outside temperatures can be below 0° F for entire scheduled work day.
- During and after heavy rains the road in and around the farms can become extremely muddy and difficult to maneuver on.
- During different job duties the noise inside or outside barns can become very loud.
- Will be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed.
- Will be exposed to electrical boxes and electrical machinery that are not to be entered or repaired by those who are not certified in basic electrical training and/or lock out tag out.
- Will be exposed daily to procedures that may cause contact with hazardous materials.
