Motion Graphics Designer - Mashable

Editorial New York, New York

Position at Mashable

Mashable is looking for a Motion Graphics Designer with a strong eye for design and a passion for making entertaining, internet-friendly content. They’ll design and animate titles and graphics for Mashable’s live action videos, plus develop highly-creative, fully-animated content for platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Giphy, and Byte.

The Motion Graphics Designer is a unique role that encourages unbridled creativity in graphic design. The ideal candidate will be an innovative thinker with a strong eye for design (especially typography). We’re looking for someone with a fundamental understanding of best practices who can efficiently handle straightforward asks — but they’re also a wellspring of unique ideas. They’re always eager to try something new and not afraid to have fun or get weird. Moreover, they’re extremely online: fluent in social media, memes, and the weird nuances of internet culture.

A successful candidate has a killer reel and portfolio that demonstrates both creativity and skills set. Ideally this contains examples of both 2D and 3D on-trend motion graphics such as kinetic typography, title sequences, logos, lower thirds, and fully-animated explainer videos produced for broadcast or mobile platforms. The reel should establish a solid grasp of design, animation, visual storytelling, and technical expertise. Additionally, we welcome any other materials that reflect your work and demonstrate your skills: a portfolio of illustration, print design, infographics, or anything else that’s artistic or creative. We also love seeing your Instagram or content from any other social media account that demonstrates these qualities.

The Motion Graphics Designer is part of Mashable’s Art Team and reports to the Animation Director.

The day-to-day:

  • Create engaging and eye-catching graphics for Mashable’s distributed platforms.
  • Follow a style guide to design and animate content for Mashable’s Snapchat Discover.
  • Design After Effects templates for Snapchat, Instagram, and other platforms.
  • Create additional style guides as needed.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the art, video, and sales teams to identify and fulfill motion graphics needs across multiple brands.
  • Brainstorm and create original animated content for TikTok, Byte, and other platforms.
  • Engage with the social team to establish best practices for creating social media content
  • Work with the art and social teams to schedule and publish content.
  • Advise on best design practices across the Ziff Media Group.
  • Other duties as determined by team managers or editorial executive management.

  • Based in NYC
  • A degree in graphic design, animation, or an equivalent subject
  • 2+ years of experience designing and animating motion graphics, preferably at an agency, media company, or studio
  • Proficiency in After Effects, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and a working knowledge of Cinema4D
  • Comfortable working across multiple platforms, formats, and brands
  • Ability to easily conceptualize ideas — both high- and low-concept — and translate them to content
  • Self-starter attitude and deadline-oriented
  • Team player who can work both independently, within a team, and across multiple departments
  • Adaptable, receptive to feedback, and can quickly incorporate changes or revisions to work
  • Illustration, character animation, compositing, and video editing skills are a bonus
  • Open-mindedness and a sense of humor are a must
