Position at Mashable

Mashable's Social Good team is seeking an enthusiastic, nimble reporter to work at its New York City headquarters. The reporter will write stories across a broad range of topics for the section, which focuses on social impact, activism, identities, conservation, and innovative efforts to tackle the world's most pressing problems.

The ideal candidate is eager to work with a small but scrappy team taking smart, nuanced, and intersectional approaches to important issues, from LGBTQ rights to disability issues to homelessness to the refugee crisis. A demonstrated love of technology, innovation, and web culture (and how these things intersect with identity and social justice) is a plus. Please indicate in your cover letter where your passions lie. Candidates don't need to be well-versed in all social good topics, but should have proven knowledge in one or two content areas. A willingness to learn and be flexible is imperative.

Candidates should have proven reporting and fact-checking experience, be familiar with Mashable's social good coverage, be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and have a strategic, critical eye — all while balancing sensitivity and inclusivity in everything they cover.

The Day to Day

  • Taking on 2-3 assignments per day
  • Pitching and writing creative, unique stories with social impact at the core
  • Reporting "light lift" news as well as more evergreen stories, lists, etc.
  • Assisting with research
  • Helping with photo stories, videos, and other long-term projects


  • Based in NYC
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Creative ideas Mashable has never seen before
  • Solid news writing skills and a critical eye
  • Strong fact checking skills
  • Strong grasp of style and grammar
  • A self-starter as well as a team player (a sense of humor is a must!)
  • Knowledge of the digital space and Mashable's core coverage areas
