The Opportunity

MedPage Today is hiring a Contributions Editor to solicit, track, and edit the growing number of Op-Eds and other submissions we receive from our audience and network of healthcare professionals.

We’re looking for an energetic editor, who in addition to being able to edit with the best of them, enjoys reaching out to potential contributors to request contributions; managing a contributions tracker to ensure that each contribution is tracked and published in a timely manner; has experience with CMS’s and can input contributions;  and can provide the Managing Editor and Deputy Managing Editor a thumbs up or thumbs down recommendation on each submission, becoming an essential gatekeeper for what contributed content we publish.

You’ll have at least a couple of years’ experience as an editor, preferably in the healthcare space. You will handle all contributions that come in from the editorial board, regular MedPage contributors, and our audience, but will also keep your eye on twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, to be able to identify and solicit contributions from healthcare professionals who have something interesting to say.

You’ll network with authors, staff, and our Content Strategist to make sure the contributions we publish go into the right newsletter and are promoted effectively on social media. You will also act as our contributions hub, with MedPage writers passing you contributed pieces from their network for handling.

MedPage is a quickly growing site with a readership that spans all kinds of healthcare professionals. We publish clinical news and opinions; two podcasts, Anamnesis and Track the Vax; we cover Washington, and we have a quickly growing Enterprise & Investigative Team devoted to shedding light on some of the current inefficiencies and waste in medicine. As the site grows, the number of contributions we’ve received has grown apace, and this is the first time a Contributions Editor will grace our staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Input and edit all contributions that come from the MPT editorial board, readers, and other contributors
  • Keep track of the Contributions tracker to ensure that all submissions are tracked
  • Correspond daily with authors to keep them abreast of the status of their contribution
  • Input contributed pieces into our CMS
  • Liaise with authors, our social media manager, and our Content Strategist to make sure contributed pieces are promoted after their publication
  • Keep an eye on twitter, Instagram, and facebook to identify interesting voices in healthcare, and reach out to potential authors to ask for contributions.

Job Qualifications

  • At least three years as an editor, preferably in healthcare or medicine
  • Some understanding of how to read clinical studies, as this will be useful in judging some contributions
  • Some understanding of health policy issues, again as this will be useful when judging certain contributions
  • Versatility, energy, and the ability to work well with colleagues. MedPage Editorial is a relatively small and closely knit group of about 30 people, with many remote employees who all pitch in together to deliver the news and other content to busy healthcare professionals, each and every day.
