Executive Editor, News

Editorial San Francisco, California

Description

Position at IGN

The executive editor of news at IGN focuses on both a daily and long-form news content strategy. You will work with a team of writers -- both internal and freelancers -- to report on news stories from a variety of sources, including your own industry contacts. We’re looking for someone who devours news online and isn’t afraid to pick up the phone to pursue original reporting for news discovery or to add new value to reports that are already out there.

Applicants who do not provide a cover letter and writing samples will not be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Stay on top of and discover news, trends, and community engagement to identify what stories and topics we need to be covering.
  • Identify and prioritize assignments based on newsworthiness, analytics, and/or audience interest.
  • Cover press events and create content plans around major conventions and conferences.
  • Collaborate with the features team to strategize around news follow-up features.
  • Collaborate with the previews team to identify prominent topics and discussions that can be broken out as news segments.

Required skills

  • You have an established experience as a manager, editor, and news reporter.
  • You consider yourself embedded in tracking news, and can identify the most interesting and newsworthy details of a story.
  • You have regularly covered trade shows and conventions.
  • You understand how to write for IGN's audience and can optimize your pieces for both search and organic discovery.
  • You have good camera presence and can speak extemporaneously on games and entertainment-related topics.
  • You have established contacts in the gaming industry.

It would be extra awesome if…

  • You have experience in the entertainment or tech industry, in addition to games.
  • You have appeared on camera/podcasts.
  • You have a network of freelance writers, particularly of diverse backgrounds and experiences.

IGN’s editorial team is made up of all kinds of people that share a common love of games, TV, movies, comics, tech, and all things geeky. We strongly encourage people of every race, gender, sexual orientation, and background to apply.

Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
