Description

Position at IGN

Senior News Editor

IGN

IGN’s news team is looking for a senior news editor to help us steer our coverage; providing key insights, making content decisions, editing everything from breaking news to long-form reports, and contributing world-class writing. A Pacific Time role, you’ll be working with the executive editor of news, the in-house news team, and a pool of freelancers, becoming responsible for content covering gaming, movies, TV, tech, comics, and science. You’d also be working alongside other IGN teams, helping to coordinate how original content from previews, events, podcasts and more becomes a source for news.

IGN’s editorial team is made up of all kinds of people that share a common love of games, TV, movies, comics, tech, and all things geeky. We strongly encourage people of every race, gender, sexual orientation, and background to apply.

Responsibilities

Leading the IGN news team during west coast hours, and working with the executive editor to set a successful news strategy.

Spotting the news stories or angles that will work for IGN’s audience, and giving them the best possible treatment - from breaking stories in the moment, to organising careful, months-long reports.

Editing work from the in-house and freelance news teams.

Making moment-to-moment news calls including what to cover, how we cover it, and who covers it for us.

Working with the executive editor of news and our in-house reporters to help discover, research, and guide original reporting.

Monitoring industry and audience trends and cultural events, and building coverage around them.

Building and utilising industry contacts to strengthen our news coverage and secure exclusives.

Working across departments to help find the news in IGN’s wider output.

Required Skills

You have notable experience in a news editor role, and have managed staff and freelancers previously.

You’re passionate about discovering and telling stories responsibly, and helping others to do so.

You have strong editorial opinions and journalistic standards, excellent writing skills, and an impeccable eye for an edit.

You’re embedded in the world of gaming and entertainment, and can spot a story amid the noise.

You understand how to write for IGN's audience.

You have established contacts in the gaming and/or entertainment industries.

It would be extra awesome if…

You’re based in Los Angeles, or San Francisco - or can get to our offices in those cities.

        You have experience in SEO.

You have good camera presence and can speak extemporaneously on games and entertainment-related topics.

You have regularly covered trade shows and conventions.

        You’ve appeared on podcasts.

You have a degree in journalism or relevant media topic.

Expertise in the fields of any or all of tech, science, comic books, or game development.

If you think this sounds like the job for you, please apply, and make sure to provide a resume, cover letter, and at least three writing samples that you think show your aptitude for the role. (If you’re having any issues uploading multiple documents, feel free to combine them into one.)

Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
