Reviews Editor - Mashable

Editorial New York, New York

Position at Mashable

Mashable is hiring an experienced and enthusiastic editor to help us expand our service journalism, from product reviews and roundups to guides and explainers. This is a unique opportunity to both optimize Mashable’s current offerings and develop an impactful content strategy from the ground up, with hands-on editorial work that informs and engages big audiences. From initial assignments to editing, publication, distribution, and cross-team coordination, the Reviews Editor will serve as the command center for Mashable’s service journalism.

We’re looking for a strategic thinker who also has a deep understanding of voice and brand. The role will be highly collaborative and requires strong interpersonal skills: The position necessitates working across all of Mashable’s teams — editorial, video, commerce, art, and social media — to create and run a cohesive content plan. They’ll also work closely with Ziff Media Group’s analytics, growth, product, and business teams in order to meet ambitious goals for audience and engagement.

Then, of course, there’s the editorial work: This role is best suited for someone who’s comfortable working closely with both staff writers and freelancers of varying levels of experience, always with an eye towards quality, depth, and style. And while the role’s primary responsibility is to assign, edit, and coordinate content, there’ll be no shortage of opportunities to flex one’s creative muscles, from onsite bylines to crafting the language around packaging and distribution. As such, the ideal candidate must be an excellent writer who’s passionate about what they put on the page: writing with clarity and personality is a must.

A typical day may involve working with a section editor to assign zeitgeisty lifestyle product roundup, editing a staffer’s longform review of a flagship mobile product, recruiting and working with freelancers, sending out the perfect desktop or news alert, working with the SEO team to refine strategy and priorities, or coordinating production calendars between shopping, video, and editorial teams.

The Reviews Editor will report to Mashable’s Editor in Chief.

You, our dream hire, are

  • A creative thinker who’s also organized — honestly, you’re an ops ninja. You love a good editorial calendar.
  • A self-starter with a strategy-first mindset, always looking for opportunities to drive growth and success.
  • Comfortable working with business teams to find editorially and ethically sound solutions that meet the company’s strategic needs.
  • Detail-oriented, both editorially and on the production backend.
  • An excellent and engaging writer as well as a disciplined editor with a firm grasp of AP style.
  • A tech-savvy expert who naturally geeks out about cool products.
  • A total team player with a can-do attitude and isn’t afraid to have a little fun. Interpersonal skills are a must.

  • Minimum eight years of relevant experience writing and editing at a publication or in a digital media environment.
  • A passion for service journalism, with a demonstrated history of creating content that serves to inform audiences and provide guidance.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Well-versed in creating cross-team editorial calendars and coordinating with multiple departments.
  • Experience working with audience and growth teams.
  • Deep knowledge of consumer technology, gadgets, and digital lifestyle products.
  • Understanding of Mashable's core coverage areas and voice.
  • Ideally based in New York, but will consider some flexibility.
