What you’ll do:  SWZD is looking for an Engineering Manager that will manage a geographically distributed, cross-functional backend engineering team. You will have hands-on engineering accountability and be responsible for developing with your team, as you lead, coach, and mentor, leveraging your knowledge and skills across projects and stakeholders. You will collaborate with the DevOps team and work across other Engineering teams to identify, plan, and ensure successful execution of application and tool development. 

What will be your responsibilities? 

  • Work closely with application engineering teams and DevOps to determine engineering and infrastructure needs
  • Help prototype potential solutions and make build vs. buy vs. maintain decisions considering business and technology needs
  • Drive continuous improvement over time through process, tooling, and analysis of our systems holistically
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance & coaching to engineers in the team, guiding them to maintain high standards of code quality and testing practices
  • Develop our talent with coaching, professional development, goal setting and performance management
  • Hold weekly 1:1 meetings to build excellent relationships with your team and peers
  • Take responsibility of sprint and release commitments, impediments resolution, escalation
  • Create an environment that empowers and energizes team members, with focus on accountability, adaptability, and collaboration
  • Participate in development and evolution of engineering standards and guidelines


What does it take to do this job?

  • 5+ years experience building / leading teams responsible for development, maintenance, and operation of large scale, distributed, and web applications
  • 2+ years direct management experience
  • Proven ability to attract, retain & develop key and diverse talent
  • 8+ years of experience building well-tested, scalable, distributed, high-volume, low-latency systems
  • Expertise with relational databases
  • Advanced knowledge in at least one programming language (Ruby, Golang, Python preferred)
  • Strong understanding of complex enterprise technology with the ability to introduce improved experiences and simpler processes
  • Expertise working in a cloud-based environment (e.g. AWS) is preferred
  • Ability to lead and participate in the design and architecture of new systems and deep dive into existing systems
  • Familiarity with data governance practices and GDPR
