Everyday Health is looking for a passionate design leader to help set the user experience and creative vision for our platform. As a Director of UX and Design, you bring an obsession for research-driven, futuristic, scalable design thinking. You inspire those around you to create and evolve digital products that positively influence personal wellness and reduce barriers to a healthy lifestyle.

About You

You are naturally curious and have strong instincts for what great experiences can be. You are a fierce advocate for your user and understand how human-centered design practices can lead to valued, user-friendly products. You’re an expert in translating complex research into actionable design decisions. You know how to demonstrate ideas with prototyping and how to sell it in with storytelling.

You are experienced at leading the design execution for any digital platform, including mobile web, native apps, and emerging technologies. You make it a point to meet and ideate with stakeholders early and often, fostering a collaborative and productive working environment. You balance a strong creative vision with performance  and profitability goals and effectively communicate the power of systematic design principles to all audiences.

You are comfortable with quick turnaround times and creating products that meet both technology and business constraints. Despite any limitations, you are motivated by the prospect of ongoing optimizations and going above and beyond user expectations.

You are a proven design leader, as well as a team player. You enjoy coaching and motivating others to produce their best work and gaining insight from product, engineering, editorial, audience, and analytics teams to bring simple, elegant solutions to market.

Leadership, Communication, and Problem Framing Skills
  • Ability to partner effectively across the organization, fostering collaboration and a productive working environment with product, engineering, editorial, marketing, ad ops, and senior leadership
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate complex interaction concepts, clearly and persuasively, across different audiences at any level of the organization
  • Experience crafting interdisciplinary team workshops to frame problems, mine for insights, align on product definition, and convert learnings into new product or feature ideas
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity surrounding design problems and pushing for the exploration of multiple solutions to a single design problem
User Experience Design Oversight
  • Mastery of user experience principles and techniques, and proven leadership skills with the ability to manage, nurture, and inspire a creative team in delivering innovative products
  • Ability to envision complex UX ecosystems and lead the creation of original, engaging concepts that address design problems, deliver on user and brand values, and inspire teams to push the boundaries of what’s possible
  • Proficient in leading sketching, wireframing, and interaction modeling exercises, informed by user research, stakeholder requirements, content strategy, and use case scenarios across any/all digital platforms
  • Experience leading the execution of design system production and implementation, ensuring design principles are upheld and company-wide consistency is achieved
  • Proficient in how motion can enhance the user experience and willingness to coach the greater design and tech teams to execute on an overarching vision
  • Unwavering attention to detail, an acute awareness that everything counts, and the drive to raise the bar with each new product release
Research and Strategy Management
  • Fluent in user research strategy — identifying opportunities to explore or validate design concepts with users, crafting audience-appropriate screeners and questionnaires, and drawing out valuable user insights and potential design optimizations
Project, Priority, and Timeline Adherence
  • Ability to estimate how much time, effort, and resources are needed per task and communicate with project management to prioritize requests, create timelines, and allocate resources across engagements
  • Experience leading the execution of agile methodologies, including Scrum an/or Kanban frameworks, as a means to learn through experiences, self-organize, continuously improve, and deliver exceptional, turnkey digital products
  • Commitment to working with product and project management to ensure on-time design delivery
  • Experience working with project managers to balance evolving project needs, communicating blockers and delays as necessary
  • Self-motivated, highly-organized, always open to shifting priorities when required
  • Experience building end of year budget proposals that evaluates the creative team’s on-going technology, research, software, and training needs
  • 10+ years of experience working in the field of digital product design
  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a Design Director – managing small to large digital product teams
  • A strong online portfolio demonstrating design sensibilities, UX principles, and research-driven thinking for web, software, and/or mobile applications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience Design (UXD), Visual Communication Design, or similar
  • Expert in executing agile methodologies (Scrum or Kanban)
  • Proficiency in Jira, or similar
  • Proficiency in Sketch, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator
  • Proficiency in prototyping tools e.g. Invision
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics – a plus
  • Familiarity with product animation tools g. Invision Studio, Framer X, or similar – a plus
