Culture Reporter - Mashable

Editorial New York, New York

Position at Mashable

The Details

Mashable is hiring an experienced and energetic culture reporter to join our team in New York. The ideal candidate will be deeply obsessed with internet culture, social media, and the way we live through digital connections. The role necessitates an excellent writer who can skillfully report on anything and everything happening online: high/low trends, interesting personalities, oddities and curiosities, underground movements, and even the darkest corners of the web.

We’re looking for someone who’s highly attuned to what’s happening online in any given moment — from super-niche memes to rumblings from the internet’s miserable underbelly — and is comfortable covering all of it. They’re curious to the point of being nosy, constantly seeking more information and context in order to tell the best stories possible. They should be able to quickly identify and cover the trending moments, news, and drama that appeal to our audience, but always with an eye toward the bigger picture: how we’re interacting in the digital world and how it’s shaping society. They can bring smart analysis to any kind of storytelling.

The culture reporter will be responsible for writing a mix of news stories, opinion pieces, explainers, reviews, and in-depth reported features. They should be comfortable working in a variety of formats across multiple platforms as needed. Flexibility is a must. The role is best suited for a natural self-starter with strong journalism skills, a keen attention to detail, and a lively voice.

You, our ideal candidate, are...

  • A top-notch trendspotter who can generate compelling story ideas with strong angles.
  • An experienced journalist who can verify facts, shape intriguing narratives, and find trustworthy sources.
  • A confident storyteller who’s comfortable covering dark or sensitive topics
  • An excellent and engaging writer with a firm grasp of AP style and the ability to quickly turn around clean copy to meet tight deadlines.
  • An internet-savvy expert capable of going deep to find stories.
  • A total team player with a spirited, can-do attitude who isn’t afraid to have a little fun or get weird with your work.

The Day to Day

  • Write an average of 2-3 stories per day, primarily relating to internet culture but also other topics at the editor’s discretion.
  • Regularly pitch daily stories to editors and participate in staff discussions both online and IRL.
  • Generate ideas for original content with compelling angles.
  • Juggle shorter news hits with longer trend pieces and features.
  • Participate in editorial series and special initiatives, collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom and video team, and create content for Mashable’s distributed platforms as needed.

  • Based in New York.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years reporting experience, preferably at a digital media publication.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment where flexibility is a must.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to take initiative.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable managing sensitive topic areas.
  • A self-starter as well as a team player — a sense of humor is a must!
  • Deep knowledge of the digital space and Mashable's coverage areas.
