The Opportunity

Everyday Health is looking for an Executive Managing Editor (EME) to integrate the efforts of the editorial, community, product, and audience development teams to ensure optimal performance of Migraine Again and The Daily Migraine. Working with the MA Editor in Chief, MA Senior Editor and EH VP of Content Strategy, the Executive Managing Editor helps to shape and implement the MA Content Strategy plan to address community needs and realize SEO potential; manages the team and its workflow, including new product features and productions; engages disease-state medical experts, nonprofits, and community advocates who can build authority and cross-promote our content; leverages synergies across MA, EH, and other J2 sites.

The Executive Managing Editor continually works to improve both tools and processes to streamline team operations. The Executive Managing Editor is also responsible for weekly team management and HR; business and project management and reporting; internal collaboration with Audience Development, Product and Operations to improve the audience experience and engagement.

The Executive Managing Editor helps identify content gaps, collaborates on the new site development, discovers new ways to promote our content and new content partnerships that accelerate MA's growth. Where appropriate, the Executive Managing Editor negotiates and implements new content projects. 

The Executive Managing Editor reports to the Editor in Chief, Migraine Again. 

Key Responsibilities

Team Management

  • Manage the people, including weekly team meetings, key projects, HR functions. Understand resources required for team members to complete their jobs and help access or create them. Manage assignments and deadlines for each person via weekly 1:1s.
  • Recruit and onboard new team members, medical and community advocate contributors, and contractors in EH’s vendor system.
  • Facilitate team training on Cloud CMS, Asana, Canva and other tools as needed. 

Business and Project Management

  • Manage the business, submitting Weekly Business Report, Editorial Expense Tracker, monitoring site traffic growth and fluctuations on Google Analytics, publication/production output, delivery of sponsored assets.  
  • Manage major new projects, such as new site features or productions that require several team members, internal partners and external vendors, (e.g. webinars, new video/audio projects, new community features, Tippi, Find a Doctor). Align team to responsibilities using project management or similar tools.

Internal Collaboration

  • Partner with EH Audience Development to identify content strategies to grow search engine traffic, boost newsletter subscriptions and social traffic from Migraine Again and The Daily Migraine, creating meaningful KPIs for the team. 
  • Collaborate with Product Team to improve user experience of new website, newsletter design, new video and audio products. 
  • Team up with EH Editorial Operations, EH Senior Editors, Image Editors and Designers on joint content development and processes that streamline publishing and production. 
  • Identify opportunities for promotional/content synergy with other J2 and EH Divisions to drive network effect growth, including EverydayHealth.com, DailyOM.com, BabyCenter, What to Expect, PRIME, Castle Connolly TopDoctor.com. 

Disease-State Relationships

  • Act as team liaison to patient advocacy organizations to understand patient-centric care issues, develop content and promotional partnerships, identify authoritative contributors and webinar partners, and encourage content backlinks where appropriate. Attend online and in-person meetings periodically, representing MA/EH.
  • Engage with migraine/headache medical associations to understand emerging research targets and newsworthy topics, identify authoritative Key Opinion Leaders as contributors and webinar guests, and encourage backlinks where appropriate. Attend major medical conferences, representing MA/EH. 

Job Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate for this position will have 10+ years business experience, with 5+ years in General Management, Team Management, and Project Management, preferably in a content-driven business or nonprofit. 
  • A minimum of 3 years in Media, Digital Publishing, Production, PR or Agency work is required. Health industry experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and 3+ years managing people is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Life experience with migraine or another headache disorder is preferred but not required.
