JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose of roleTo manage, develop, promote, and evaluate an effective learning resource and information service which supports learning and teaching across the whole school.

The Librarian reports directly to Programme Principals and the Heads of the Primary.

Responsibilities
To actively support and promote the BCIS Mission, Vision and Values To consult with site principals to determine the goals and objectives of the library program and to establish principles of operation.
To align practices with the BCIS Learning Principles and best practices in supporting students within the library as a learning environment
To liaise with the subject and homeroom teachers of both programmes in primary, as well as those supporting EAL and FAL learners and those student with learning differences, to ensure the library supports their needs
To actively promote each student’s inclusion in the school community and ensure appropriate access to and use of the library as a learning resource and information centre.

Key tasks
Planning and development
Create and maintain a welcoming, supportive atmosphere conducive to positive learning experiences.
Organise and manage the library, ensuring its effective use by classes, groups and individuals.
Create and implement a policy for the library which incorporates the mission, vision, values and learning principles of the school, and complies with data protection, copyright, health and safety legislation and the school's disciplinary code.
Contribute to curriculum and policy development by liaising with all departments through attendance at Head of Department, ICT and whole school meetings, in addition to liaison with individual members of the teaching and learning support staff.
Select, acquire, organise and promote library resources and ICT to support teaching and learning throughout the school, including the preparation of budget bids and estimates for new resources.
Ensure equality of access for all students and staff to high quality learning resources.
Train, supervise and manage library staff, undertaking staff appraisals and inducting new staff as appropriate.
Recruit student library assistants, supervising and training them and recognising their achievements.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the service provided by the library and its impact on learning and teaching.
Supervise students using the library for independent study and follow the expectations of the school’s Behaviour Policy based on restorative practices
Support for Staff and Students
Support and advise staff and students in the selection and use of information resources to support their curricular and leisure needs.
Plan and deliver a programme to support the development and teaching of information literacy and learning skills in partnership with teaching staff and reinforce these skills where appropriate.
Promote reading and the enjoyment of reading in all its forms.
Promote and publicise the services provided by the library to the whole school community.
Professional Development
Participate in the school, department and individual review process (School Self-Evaluation)
Actively seek opportunities for CPD/ professional learning in order to keep up to date with current best practice in UK, France and world-wide
Exploit every opportunity for own professional development, sharing INSET opportunities with colleagues and other librarians, as well as maintaining a comprehensive awareness of current developments in information and library management, education and children's literature.
Develop and maintain links with other libraries and relevant organisations (e.g. School Library Association, librarians at other French and international schools, public library service, universities and colleges and museums).
Attend such meetings, workshops and courses provided in school which support the School Improvement Plan
Participate in the whole school vertical meetings with all staff
Provide appropriate CPD/ professional learning for colleagues as needed
General
Participate in the organisation and running of extra curricula activities, and attend and participate in the organisation of school events, productions and sporting events when required
Take responsibility for Health and Safety matters for the area within you teach and report any matters that are a hazard; thus ensuring that adequate safety precautions are taken with the students
Follow the Safeguarding and Child Protection policy at all times
Ensure that all behaviour issues are dealt with in accordance with the BCIS Behaviour Policy
Supervise areas of the school as outlined in the Supervision Duty Rota
Be a role model for students and ensure adherence to the Staff Code of Conduct
Carry out other related duties as required by the Academic Leadership Team (ALT).
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Library science practices, procedures, and terminology.
Functions, operations, and maintenance of a middle school library. Computerized reference materials and use of technology.
Library reference materials and sources. Dewey Decimal system of classification.
Record keeping techniques.
Oral and written communications skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
ABILITY TO:
Co-design and implement learning projects so that students learn how to locate, analyze, and responsibly use information and ideas.
Provide professional development, especially in the use of electronic and traditional information resources.
Support learning through both traditional and multimedia or electronic products. Communicate effectively and to maintain cooperative relationships with administrators, students, staff, parents, and community members.
Work effectively with culturally diverse groups. Use technology and software.
Meet schedules and timelines. Manage student behavior effectively.
