POSITION SUMMARY 

IREX seeks qualified implementation research consultants for the global, cross-sectoral USAID Youth Excel (YE) Activity. Youth Excel is designing and applying an approach to using implementation research to strengthen cross-sectoral positive youth development programming, help youth-led and youth-serving organizations use implementation research, and synthesize and promote findings broadly. Youth Excel is cross-sectoral and may work in education, employment, civic engagement, governance, gender and inclusion, health, environment/climate change, water, etc 

The Implementation Research Consultants will provide technical advising and mentoring to youth organizations around the globe who are conducting different types of local-level implementation research. The Consultant will be available for ad hoc consultations, providing technical assistance for researchreviewing and strengthening research plans, ongoing mentoring as youth organizations conduct research, input to facilitation or guides for consortium workshops and trainingsand/or input to knowledge products. The Implementation Research Consultant will align their advisory services with the Youth Excel Implementation Research approach. Consultants may in some cases design and/or lead implementation research projects or activities directly. 

Current focus regions include Africa, MENA and Central America but will expand. We strongly encourage applicants living in countries in these regions to apply.

Summary of Responsibilities: 

  • Working collaboratively with the Youth Excel team, consortium facilitators, grant awardees, consortium members, and USAID, serve as an implementation research technical expert and mentor. Learn and engage with the Youth Excel implementation research approach  
  • Accompany and/or assist in data collection to understand participant experiences using the Youth Excel implementation research approach.  
  • Support the development and strengthening of consortium member implementation research plans. 
  • Provide individualized technical assistance and support to youth-led and youth-serving organizations and youth researchers as they use a variety of implementation research methods and approaches to  strengthen positive youth development programing.  
  • Strengthen the capacity of project and partner staff to use implementation research tools and to help others do so. 
  • Provide technical guidance to collaborative events and initiatives to interrogate, synthesize, and apply research data and findings. 
  • Coach grant awardees and consortium participants in preparing knowledge products in a variety of formats. 
  • In some cases if appropriate, lead design and/or implementation of stand-alone research projects and activities. 

 

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in a field related to implementation research and/or participatory action research in a field related to international development, youth development, education, employment, health, or another relevant field. 
  • At least three (3) years’ experience using implementation research, participatory action research, or related methodologies with local organizations in East Africa, Central America, the Middle East or surrounding regions. Experience working with youth researchers in these regions is strongly preferred. 
  • Experience providing technical assistance in research to individuals who may not have had research experience.  
  • Experience upholding high ethical standards in research.  
  • Demonstrated facilitation skills with widely diverse groups. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects in fast-paced work environments, and deliver high quality results under tight deadlines. 
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills in English with additional language skills in either in Swahili, Spanish, French or Arabic a plus.   
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, reflection, and learning.
