Responsibilities & Expectations:
The Freight Handler is responsible for loading, unloading, and moving freight, particularly motors or other large items, to and from commercial trucks, flatbeds, and warehouses. This role ensures that products are properly secured, sorted, and transported in compliance with safety and operational standards. The Freight Handler may also be required to safely operate large flatbed trucks for loading and unloading tasks, and must maintain a clear driving record. This is a 2nd shift role.
- Loading and Unloading: Safely load and unload freight from trucks, flatbeds, or shipping containers using appropriate equipment, such as forklifts, over head cranes, pallet jacks, or hand trucks.
- Securing Cargo: Properly secure cargo (motors, equipment, or other materials) onto the truck or flatbed to prevent damage during transit.
- Inventory Management: Assist in verifying the quantity and condition of the freight to ensure proper documentation and avoid discrepancies.
- Record Keeping: Maintain records of items loaded or unloaded, including inventory logs and shipment details.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety procedures and protocols, including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe lifting techniques.
- Assisting in Warehouse Duties: Participate in warehouse tasks such as stocking, sorting, and organizing items to prepare them for shipment.
- Communication: Collaborate with truck drivers, shipping/receiving personnel, and supervisors to ensure timely and accurate freight handling.
- Equipment Maintenance: Inspect and maintain handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks) and report any issues to the supervisor.
- Truck Operation: Safely operate large flatbed trucks to load and unload freight when necessary, ensuring all equipment is properly secured and compliant with safety regulations.
- Clear Driving Record: Maintain a clean driving record in compliance with company and legal standards for operating vehicles in the course of employment.
Qualifications and Competencies:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in freight handling or warehousing is preferred but not required.
- Ability to lift heavy items and perform physical tasks throughout the shift.
- Knowledge of safety standards and practices in freight handling.
- Ability to operate material handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks) may be required.
- Experience driving large flatbed trucks or a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) may be required.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Clear and clean driving record.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move heavy items up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Ability to climb, stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
- Must be able to work in outdoor and warehouse environments with varying temperatures
Work Environment:
- Warehouse or outdoor loading/unloading areas.
- Exposure to moving machinery and potentially hazardous materials.
- This is a 2nd shift role, although the shift may vary depending on operational needs, including nights and weekends.
